Hey, Memories of Ice was a great book. But for me, I was never as excited with Erikson as I was with Martin. It was more of a slow buildup. I enjoyed the first book, was blown away by the 2nd, loved the 3rd and 4th. I just started book 5, and more than ever I am appreciating Erikson's style.

When you're done, be sure to vote on your favorite character from Memories of Ice. (http://sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10567), but beware spoilers for now. Heck, while you're at it, have you voted on your favorite characters for Gardens of the Moon (http://sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10554), and Deadhouse Gates (http://sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10565)? There's also one for book 4, House of Chains. (http://sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11633)

I just started my second reread of Memories of Ice, and I love every second of it. It's my favourite book in the series by some margin.

Didn't you say you just re-read House of Chains? What order are you re-reading them in?

1-2-4-3-5.

I was just too interested in the Seven Cities plotline after I finished DHG, so I went straght to HoC to reread the rest of it and make the connections more easily.

I can't wait until I get a chance to re-read Memories of Ice - it topped my best fantasy novels list for a long time, and it's still 2nd. IMO Memories of Ice is one of the masterpieces of fantasy.

It was one of my favorite, except for a few storylines that, IMO, bogged the story down and didn't add much...

-The Mhybe
-Broach and Bauchelain (although I assume my opinion could change, whenever I get around to reading their short stories).

The Mhybe did drag things down... but I think the story needed that part.

as for B&B...they are really starting to rank near the top of my favorite characters list. Blood Follows was great and I cant wait till The Healthy Dead gets to my mail box around next wednesday :P

I guess B&B weren't that bad. Pretty funny. But I was frustrated by not understanding where they fit into the story. I only found out about the short stories afterwards. Sounds like I should read them!

I cannot emphasise the jewel Memories of Ice is.

At nearly 1200 pages with T'lan Imass on the Aust cover, you're bombarded with revelations what felt like every 50 pages, making that alone a thrill. Book 1's cast is back, and the new names are every bit as fascinating and varied in nature to read. Whether it's Kruppe or Quick Ben like you've never seen them, or the hilarious necromancer duo (from Erikson's two short stories)you're in for a ride. Never a dull moment, whether it's the abundant action or heated dialogue, emotion and heroism is equalled to the vile treachery and climatic finale. You won't understand the sneaky prologue, of course, but by midbook you should reread it and start grinning. The humour was simply outstanding, every bit as George Martin and more.

"You're unceasing babble is stretching my patience thin!"
"Alas," Kruppe sighs, "I can only dream of thin."

And like book 2, he's not afraid to kill ANYONE, and never foretells you!
