I think that one of my favourites is probably in both (if not all the books-anyone agree here?)

"One is the singer, hidden from sunlight
Two is the seeker, fleeing from shadows
Three is the journey taken in danger
Four are the riddles answered in treesong:
Earth, fire, water, air
Spells you OUT!"

This is at the beginning of both books before the maps and i think that it is what the whole story lies upon.

it is like a rough guide to the story really, when you think about... like a riddle within a riddle...

The lament that was chanted for Dernhil by Cadvan (The Gift, p.195) was beautifully written. That song expressed so much feelings, and created powerful imageries.

I really like the description of the forest just after Maerad and Cadvan climb down from the top of the cliff(the Gift p.261 australian edition)where it describes the dragonflys and all the flowers and trees.

and i like the complete contrast to that as well... the description of mirka's hut is so homely and it might not exactly be wlcoming but it is sweet and simple

I know this is an old thread but i'm very new here so i was just looking through the old threads. I don't suppose anyone will reply but i just had to say how much i love alisons similes and metaphors!

'The walls rose higher on either side and their hoofbeats echoed dully, as if the sound itself were afraid and cowered against the stone.' - when they r going through the broken teeth on page 351 aaaaaaand...

'The day was clear and beautiful, as if the sky had been scoured clean by the previous night's storm' the imagery in these quotes are just like...wow! lol

i love:

drunk with beauty,
i tore down, armfuls of blossom,
how desolate the marred sky!

i cant remember where it was.
but it's brilliant
