Anyone out there old enough to help me?

I am looking for a book that I read when I was a teenager. I enjoyed the book very much, but unfortunately, I can't remember the author or the title. I know....this sounds impossible and silly, but if anyone out there is willing to help I would be very grateful.

I read the book during the mid 1980's in paperback form. Best I remember, the cover was predominately yellow in color. It was the story of a young princess whose destiny it was to save her country. To that end, she was sent away for training with an old woman. When the time came, she had to make a circuit of the country. During her circuit she noticed how dismal conditions were due to the infertility of the land. In one instance, a father had taken his daughter out into the field and raped her to try to increase the fertility. During her circuit, she was helped by an angel of the goddess. As best as I can remember, he was there to continue her teaching as well as for companionship. Upon returning to the capitol city, she had to undergo a rite of fertility that was masked in secrecy. This was supposed to restore fertility to the land. There is one scene I remember from the end of the book. They are in the courtyard of the castle for a festival of sorts and the heroine has reached her full power, her angel has chosen mortality so they could be wed, and I believe she is in possession of at least one magical artifact. Purely to herself, she thinks that with this much power, she could challenge the goddess herself. Her angel (Michael, I think his name was) read her thought and told her to think that thought but once, else the goddess would take all of it away from her.

Please...if anyone remembers that book from the early to mid 1980's, tell me what it is.

Thank you,
Kristi

Hmm...I did a search for Blue Sword and found a review. Unfortunately, that isn't the book I remember, though the time frame is right. According to the review, that book was published in 1982. Thanks for your help. Hopefully, someone out there can help solve this puzzle. <crossing my fingers>
