I would say listening to music. Although I can't write while music is playing (unless the volume is very low and it is instrumental), I seem to come up with notions that later become stories.

Hmmm...this is a great question. I have often suffered from very violent writer block attacks--just read my blog entry here (http://www.sffworld.com/blog/2124.html) about it.
Still I would have to agree that listening to music helps a great deal toward generating ideas to write about or situations to inflict on unsuspecting characters.
I also like to read other people's works, which somehow inspires me to finish or start my own. Reading things that aren't sf or fantasy also helps me move on to writing and getting creative. Still, I have to say the absolute best starter for me is staying up to 2 a.m. I am ALWAYS creative by then.
