Hmmm ok... here follows my first impressions of The Crow.

As always, brilliantly written.
Many styles of writing are interesting and functional. But Alison writes every chapter as if it is a poem. For me this poetry in all language conveys so much more meaning, creates so much impact, and makes a reading so pleasurable. The Crow proves no exception. The language is beautiful to read.

Awsome Characterisation
Like others, I was dubious when I heard that the plot would stray from Cadvan and Maerad. I take it all back! It was so exciting to discover so many more "real" people. Each one was so complex, so human in the way their personalities were portrayed. Likewise, the development was so real it ensured I was glued to my seat. Hem's maturing throughout the course of the book exemplified this especially.

The World of Annar
To me the Fantasy genre is defined by the realism of the world the author creates for us to explore and exist in. By focusing on Hem's journeys, Alison explands this hyperreality for us, adding many more layers to her amazing creation. The history, the politics, the creatures. All elements of this fantasy are indeed fantastic!

The Narrative
One of the reasons I loved The Gift and The Riddle was because the narrative seemed to progress so naturally. Everything happened just as it should, when it should, and even the shocks/suprises/twists seemed to just flow naturally out of the past events and onto the future ones. To me, this "natural flow" is so important in maintaining realism of plot. The Crow just didn't have this. For me it seemed to lack this "finishing touch." The narrative was interesting, creative, progressive, unique, and more, but I felt like it just wasnt quite as spontaneous as the last two books in this series. Don't get me wrong, the plot will not dissapoint anyone! I was just so aware of how much I enjoyed the natural storytelling of the last two. Perhaps it was the sheer volume of content that was packed into this one? Anyway, that tiny point on plot is my one and only critism of The Crow.

Ok so hope I've not offended anyone with that last comment... And I should just end by re-enforcing what a totally enjoyable read The Crow was!

3rd July?! Darn! My exams finish in a week, and I was hoping to get it and read to distract myself from the worry. *Sigh* I guess it gives me time to reread the others and refresh my memory.
