This may be small and obscure, but I am trying to remember the name of a book (or series) that I read maybe 15 years ago. I give you what details I can remember.

Starts out in modern times. A group of friends are playing a D&D type RPG. They are somehow trasnported into the fantasy world as the characters they are playing. The people from the world see them as their characters, but they still know eachoter as their old selves. I want to say the main characters name is Carl...He's a warrior and becomes the ruler of the land. His girlfriend is a wizard. They install plumbing for showers in a castle but she has to use her magic to heat the pipes for hot water.

It's one of those deals I remebered it, but I'll go crazy if I don't remember the name. :D

Joel Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame Series.

1>The Sleeping Dragon
2>The Sword and the Chain
3>The Silver Crown
4>The Heir Apparent
5>The Warrior Lives
6>The Road to Ehvenor
7>The Road Home

Then there are a few other books set in the same world
but the RPG player characters are secondary;

8> Not Exactly the Three Musketeers
9> Not Quite Scaramouche
10>Not Really the Prisoner of Zenda

These 3 really didn't work for me. Not well written, they do
little to continue the story, seemd like a grab for money
to me.

Then there are collections:
Guardians of the Flame - first 3 novels
Guardians of the Flame:Legacy - novels 4-5
Guardians of the Flame:To Home and Ehvenor - novels 6-7

The main character is in fact Karl Cullinane. :D
