I like anime. I'll have to admit that I've never seen Akira before, or at least I don't think I have. I watch them when I go to Taiwan, because they don't show much anime here in the US. But, when I'm in Taiwan, everything's in Mandarin or Taiwanese so I have no idea what the title is (I can understand but I can't read). It kind of sucks because I'll be watching this really good anime show and then I'll have to go back to the states because my vacation is over. Then I can't even go rent tapes because I don't know what it's called.

Hey people, what's the word on these? I've seen them around and they look interesting. If ever, I wanna go for colleting these http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Anime:

1. Vandread
2. Gatekeepers
3. El-Hazard
4. You're Under Arrest
5. Bianca something? (this computer-generated anime about a starship)
6. Sakura Wars

(as you notice, some of these are using computer-generated graphics already)

Manga:

1. Grey
2. Appleseed

Any other recommendations? http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Anyone familiar with Devilman?
I saw the first two but I have been unsuccesfull at locating the third.

I really love the first two though.. one of the creepiest animes I've ever seen.

Who's seen Cyber City Oedo? I saw the first tape and it was pretty damn cool. If you want to browse a vast list, complete with synopses, check out www.anime-otaku.com (http://www.anime-otaku.com) . I haven't been there in a while, but they had a pretty sweet web-site goin' last time I was there.

is everyone talking only about anime movies or comic books as well? people say "i saw Akira", but there's also a 6 volume comic book (more than 2000 pages) and it is much better than the movie itself, which rules anyway. Akira (the book) is just... unbelievable, you might say it's a bit overhyped but when i compare it to some other stuff... they just can't compete, the facial expressions in akira, the poses, the angles, the perspectives, the city, it's all just amazing. ghost in the shell is also a legend, in my opinion. first see ghost in the shell and then see the matrix...

I used to be a big anime fan though I've not kept up with it for a few years now. My favourites are things like Gunbuster, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Urusei Yatsursa, Ranma 1/2, Riding Bean, Ghost in the Shell, Ulysses, Ah My Goddess and My Neighbour Totoro. I'm missing out a ton of classics there....

I didn't like the Cyber punk stuff though nor Devil Man. One Cyber City episode was really good (the first I think) but the rest and the Geno Cyber stuff reeked.

To be honest, there's not much new episodic anime that interests me lately. Though movie wise, there's Perfect Blue, X and a few others.

I think I'll add my two cents to this thread :)

Some absolute MUST see stuff (in my opinion) that hasn't already been mentioned in this thread is:

Princess Mononoke
Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen

As for some good episodic anime:

Initial D
Inu Yasha
Vision of Escaflowne
Love Hina
Fruits Basket
Vampire Princess Miyu
Sol Bianca
Maritan Successor Nadesico
Gundam 0083
Flame of Recca
FLCL
Black Heaven
Armoured Trooper Votoms
Angelic Layer
Rurouni Kenshin
Serial Experiments Lain

Though I'm like you Thonoir, in that I haven't watched anime in a long time. But either way, that list has got a bit of everything for everyone in it.

Good list there. I should have added Mononoke at least. :) And Wings of Honneyamise.... I'm going to stop there before I go off on one again :D
