The only fantasy world that I really truly loved for itself and not the story taking place in it would be The Land (Donaldson.)

Yeah, The Land would be a perfect place to live, except without Lord Foul and his minions.

Of what???

Of Middle-Age British Isles of course.
This is fun, as I now remember posting something similar in a similar thread months ago (I wasn't too hot on Middle-Earth either, although i freely admit that this must be due to my average appreciation of LoTR)

The thing is, this thread is quite vague. You can like a fantasy world because of its rich description (and Westeros is indeed well described), or you can like it for the thinking and creativity that got into it (and this is not, IMO, the case of Westeros). Or you can like a fantasy world just because you liked the stories happening in them, but I think it is not really the point of this thread.

I see where you're comming from . Though correct me if I'm wrong , Middle Earth was supposed to be a Mythical Britain .

There is so many worlds out there that just suck you in Anne Bishop's Realms, Katherine Kerr's Deverry but the one that struck me as beautiful because it was tied to so much sorrow was G.G. Kay's Tigana.
