Guys, Guys, Guys! Let's use some imagination here! Eddings is terrific, and so are McCaffrey, Weber & Zimmer Bradley. But there are other terrific authors out there. What about Jennifer Roberson, Holly Lisle, Robert
Asprin, or Lisanne Norman? There's also Doranna Durgin, Elizabeth Moon, & let's not forget the Shadow series by Chris Claremont & George Lucas? What about Tanya Huff? And last but not least, let's go for that golden oldie master....E.E."Doc" Smith. Look for his books, because he's just some great space opera where the good guys beat the bad guys. Of course, you can only find him in the used bookstores, but he's worth the hunt. Don't limit yourselves to the wellknown, try the lesser known & the new authors for some real trips!

Reached the end of a spectacular series, an epic adventure and don't know where to turn to fill the craving?
You can't replace the experience you've just had, but you can find a refreshing change from castle adventures, dragon flights and other tools of the fantasy genre with something call urban fantasy.
Be brave, take a deep breath and open a Charles De Lint novel. You'll find yourself scouring shelves to find more of his work to satisfy your new craving.

Lots of good authors listed so far, i agree with some though find others terribly difficult to read, Eddings & McAffery in chief. Don't get me wrong I'm not bad mouthing, hell anybody whose got the guts to write and get published is pretty terrific. Peronal faves:
Katherine Kerr
Melanie Rawn
followed by
Robert Jordan
L.E. Modesit
Elizabeth Moon
Love also George R R Martins two books. I did really enjoy Raymond Feist but his later books turned me off, especially Krondor the Betrayel. I did love his Empire series with Janny Wurts, I'm busy buying up her books now as I haven't read anything else by her. Anybody got thoughts on her?

I like David Eddings myself, but I hae this wierd feeling that his wife does most of the dirty work and old Davy hogs the credit.
Read through the Belgariad and the Malloreon, and especially the Elenium and the Tamuli. Much of it reads like a woman's writing in its handling of sex and violence

There is not as much mention of Tolkien as I thought there would be. I guess I made the assumption that most people get hooked by his "Lord of The Rings" (eh Bilbo?). Anyway I am not as well read as a lot of you but here are the ones I have enjoyed, not necessarily in order.
J.R.R. Tolkien "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of The Rings"
R. Jordan "The Wheel of Time"
T. Goodkind "The Sword of Truth"
R. Feist "The Riftwar Saga" and "The Serpent War Saga"
D. Eddings "The Belgariad"
I have also read Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series but did not find it quite as enjoyable as the ones listed above.

I've written many...these are my faves. I never touch Robert Jordan because I personally want to protect the rain forests and I don't see him having any qualms about wasted millions of pages of paper made from trees that were once alive...
<evil grin>
Also please do not be offended by my attitude, it comes with the nickname, and if a person can flame Mr. Tolkein without his or her conscience getting in the way, I can flame Mr. Jordan in a similar fashion.
Long live the freaks.

Russell, Gaiman, Nyland, Scott Rohan are a few of my favorite.
I am reading SF for 30 years now and I am getting kind of bored with the middle of the road stuff, like Eddings.
