The demise of Sega as a major player in the console wars was a sad day. The Megadrive was an awesome console and the Dreamcast was hugely under-rated. Sega unfortunately struggled to match Nintendo's N64 and the Sony Playstation was the final nail in the coffin. Sega makes games these days rather than consoles.

They quit the console hardware business after the Dreamcast failed to take off. Which, even thought it was a great console, was crushed by the marketing $$$ of Sony/Micro$oft.

After this, they decided it would be more profitable to focus on software development and coin-ops.

They were one of my favourite developers but there has been a bit of a slump in the quality of a lot of their recent games. Still, you can generally count on them to bring out a lot of original idea's unlike a lot of their competitors.
