It's not actually out on DVD yet, but here's the only 2006 movie so far that I will buy on DVD:

Beowulf & Grendel, the excellent Canadian/Icelandic production I mentioned on this site a few months ago. It was only released in Canada and a few other film festivals around the world, but not the US. It was very good, IMO, and a must-have on DVD if you are at all into scandinavian epics, medieval movies, vikings, legends, fantasy, etc.

This movie really came under the radar, and almost no one has heard of it, so I highly recommend keeping it in mind, and possibly ordering it from amazon.ca when it comes out, on July 18, 2006.

HERE (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000F4PD7G/ref=amb_link_1110042_/702-4331522-5740043) is the link to the DVD on amazon.ca

And HERE (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F4PD7G/qid=1148596119/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/002-1545926-0684058?n=130) are some reviews on the American site, amazon.com

(PS, there is another version of Beowulf coming out next year, with a much bigger budget.. but it will be all CG animated, over motion-capture performances. So this movie might be the best live-action version of Beowulf that you'll ever get!).

I posted a bunch of AWESOME pictures from the movie, but they don't seem to be working. But if you follow this link (http://www.beowulfandgrendel.com/), you can peruse the photo gallery yourself. Check it out!

The 2007 Beowulf should be interesting too. Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary wrote the screenplay.

Thanks for the heads up, EA. I hadn't heard of this movie but it looks great--judging from the trailer, the scenery is quite breathtaking if nothing else. But the acting looks good too. I will definitely be checking it out when it comes out on DVD.

Were I a Troll.

I would ROAR, and rattle your door, I would bellow and shake my fists, were I a Troll.

Lurking in the dark, where the mildew rots and the crawly bugs scamper I would wait...were I a Troll.

Coarse, tangled, fetid hair would hang from my back, and sprout from places that no god (living or dead) ever intended. I would glory in my strength, and bang my fists against the earth, were I a Troll.

I would not, however, sit through the new Beowulf and Grendel movie ever again - Even were you to promise me...That yes, I too could be a Troll.

How sad. And even worse, how disappointing. Not a total bomb in entertainment history, but far from a success either.

I'm not trying to start something, I just didnt like it. I'm glad that people found enjoyment from it, it just wasnt my thang. :)

Fair enough. I'll admit it had a couple flaws. The worst thing, IMO, was that the famous Canadian actress (Sarah Polly) was the only character to make NO attempt at an accent, she just spoke in a regular Toronto voice.

But otherwise I thought it was a pretty high quality movie, especially with such a small production budget. Better than most Hollywood fare.
