Hi, this is my first posting so be kind. I was wondering if I was the only one who was at least a little disturbed/disgusted with the incest in Katherine Kerr's first book in her Deverry series, Daggerspell. While I have thoughroughly enjoyed George R.R. Martin's series despite its own incestuous tendencies (mainly due to the other fascinating characters and broad scope of world and plot), I have yet to go past Kerr's first book in her Deverry series mainly because of the incestuous content in Daggerspell. I was wondering if it is worthwhile to pick up the other Deverry books and whether they also contain such disturbing content that was in Daggerspell. Thanks for any help

Katherine Kerr's books all seem to share the same moral framework. Which is at least consistent I guess. Like you I'm a bit put-off by it....but on balance I think her books worth reading. Though after a while I found them very...repetitive. I'm not sure what message she's trying to send but I got a little bit bored with the self-righteous attitudes of the main characters and the contempt for any viewpoint other than the one she seems to put forward. They're certainly worth reading if you've run out of other authors more to your taste. *shrug*
Just an opinion.

I have read all of the first series and some of the second series - as Giarc mentions they do get repetative. I thoroghly enjoyed the first series - the incest did not phase me or put me off reading the rest. If you can put this aside Maxxim, you will enjoy a good read. The previous lives Kerr has invented for the various characters and the twists she throws in for Nevyn to try and sort out are brilliant

I have read all the Deverry books out so far, and a few of Katherine Kerr's Sci/Fi. also the new stand alone Snare.
The incest is not that big a deal and is certainly not promoted in anyway. The Deverry books are on the whole some of the best non standard fantasy you are likely to run across and well worth the effort to read.

The incest was a small a part of the greater wrong that the story sets out to make aright , hardly shocking , disturbing or disgusting . Kerr , IMO , handled the tasteless parts very well . As for repetative , when you reread the same page over and over that's repetative !! :D

kegasaurus , no I haven't read her new book yet , but would like a dollar for every time I've picked it up . Still a little too pricey for the Trade Paperback .:)

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and read it myself.

I didn't find the incest parts in Kerr's story to be replusive at all. Not that I condone it in real life. Horrible things like incest are what happens in a medieval society. Same thing goes for war, famine, plague, etc. Some authors choose to use these kinds of realistic elements in their stories. Look at aSoI&F. However, there are some readers that don't like this type of fantasy.

I haven't read the latest Deverry book. I think I stopped at Days of Air and Darkness. IMO, the series slowly went down hill after the part of the series that involved Nevyn was over.

I´ve read all the Kerr books that i´ve found in the library, witch is the Deverry books.

I thought the first books were great! The last books I thought were a bit boring, just a little bit. I´ve been actually thinking about reading all the books again, coz it´s gone a while since I last read them:D
