Since it looks like most of you have read this series, I would like to know your opinions on it. Personally I think that it was great, with the four worlds that led the reader into a completly different setting for the first four books. I did not really like the ending, for I thought it ended a bit abruptly and didn't really conclude everything to my satisfaction(even though I did learn what happened to them in the appendix after the story).
So, what do you all think of the series?

It's been a few years since I finished reading the Deathgate Cycle series, so my memory is quite hazy. I'd say that the first four books were definitely good reads, since they were set in each of the four 'elemental' worlds which contributed to their individual uniqueness. But books 5 and 6 started to drag at some points, and even got downright confusing with all these sudden appearances of major bad guys that were only hinted at in the first four books. Still, one of the few Weis & Hickman series I've read and enjoyed.

IMHO... ^_^

I really liked this series when i read it, the characters were cool, especially the dog, heh, my favorite character. Haplo, Xar Alfred and the rest were good characters too and Fiz.. eh.. Zifnab as special guest was hilarious.

The worlds building was very good too, but yes i agree that there was some problems with the ending also it kinda bugged me that the Pytrins and Sartan were so much superior to the other races to the point that a normal mortal has no chance against them.
But all in all a good series.

Hugh the Hand!! Hugh the Hand!! Though I was somewhat disappointed at the way he was brought back, and also at the ending (especially after going through 7 books) I thought it was a fairly good read overall.

For some reason I could not get past book 2. I will give it another go at some point, since I have enjoyed most of Weis and Hickman stuff.

Waiting for the War of Souls book 1 to come out in paperback.

I thought the Deathgate Cycle was easily the best work of Weis and Hickman, but considering the quality of the other works I read (Dragonlance and Darksword), that's not saying much.

Still, the Deathgate Cycle was a good read, and the only thing I've read from these authors that I felt was solidly written to an audience over the age of fourteen.

I thought the characters grew, the story was complex enough to grab my attention, and the world was unique, to say the least.

the ending was a bit contrived, but still satisfying. I thought there was just a bit too much "cuteness" thrown in, but that's trivial.

it's a good series.

THis was definately one of my favorite series. Like FitzChivlary said, one of my favorite characters was definetly the dog. A lot of you have said that you didn't like the ending. I didn't really like the ending either, but I couldn't really think of way to send it differently so that things worked out. Did you not like the ending because of the way it worked out? or was it just because it felt kind of abrupt?

I actually quite enjoyed this series. All of it. I didn't mind the end, and enjoyed the "Who is God" questions that it raised.
I played the computer game before I read the books however. I don't know if this had any bearing upon my enjoyment of the series. It was pretty weird reading the series and saying "Who's this Alfred guy?" and "Why does Hugh the Hand have such a large role?" however.

I also played the computer game before I read the books and I think that is what actually got me interested in reading them. while I was reading them I kept remembering things from the game that were similar, but slightly different. I thought it was interesting to compare the series and the game.

I enjoyed the first four books, I thought they were well descripted and carried the living essence of the worlds they created. I did not like the last three books however as I felt they were slapped together last minute and were poorly thought through. For all the work they did, you have to wonder why they did such shoddy work in the last three novels.
