Details are very sketchy. I read this book when I was very young so it might even be children's fantasry. It goes something like this: A young man somehow finds a portal to some other kingdom or dimension where there is there is this race of people (for some reason they remind me of the mystics from the movie "the dark crystal"). I can't remember why he was there but I think he reluctantly marries one the people from this other world and finds some happiness - but then something happens and he's whisked away back to his own world. I tried looking for the sequel all summer but gave up once school started. This was years back.
