Hi - I've got a question for you.
Which book that you are reading now/or have read previously would you make into a film, and who would you choose to play the parts (dead or alive actors)?

My fave is already being made into a film - LotR - but I have always seen Gandalf IMO played by Sean Connery (mainly as I love Sean Connery's acting).

The problem with making Fantasy books into movies is that a lot of the good ones are series and so would have to be several movies. That and that the movies are never as good as the books. I do think though that a movie of the Death Gate Cycle would be cool. I don't know who I would want to see in it though.

Another problem with trying to turn a good scifi/fantasy book into a film version is that most are so detailed, or complex, that the film just doesn't work. Point in case - Battlefield Earth. This was probably the worst film ever made, but the book was pretty good. You've got people who don't connect with the whole fantasy motif taking good books and turning them into really bad movies. I have high hopes for the LotR movie and the Pern movie, though. I am really excited about the Pern movie because it is one of my fav series. I think Harrison Ford would be a great F'lar, and Gabriel Byrne with the sexy accent would be a wonderful Robinton.

I realise that so many fantasy series would have to be 'sequels', and that the film medium may or may not work!!! (Battlefield Earth, The Lord of the Rings part 1 (a cartoon and actors mixed together type film of about 12 yrs ago- which I thought IMO was crap!)) - but my query was meant hypothetically!!!

If you were given as much money as you could need, and had a guarentee of success, which book would you turn into film.

When is the Pern film due out anyway? I have not heard much about it - any web site available for it?

I'm not sure if there is a definite release date for it yet, it may still be in pre-production. Check out Anne McCaffrey's web site for more info.

Dragonlance - I think that would make a pretty good movie, keeping in mind the fact that it could probably fit into a single 3 hour movies, the characters are rather well developed and a lot of physical action is involved.

I'd love to see "Magician" as a movie, though.

One series that i would like to see as a movie would be the Gap series. I know that it isn't likely due to the fact its five books long and, to be good, would have to be five books long.

But I can dream...

The Gap series - well it has the potential to make a great movie but to really carry its full impact it would have to be rated NC-17 or even worse http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif Also, like all of Donaldson's writing it involves a lot of thinking by the characters and that cannot be conveyed properly by a movie - witness The "Dune" movie.

But as you said, we can always dream...

Well if we're going completely hypothetically here, I'd LOVE to see the Song of Ice and Fire on the big screen. Massive battles, political in-fighting, Large continents, castles, lot's of side stories. That and I'd finally get to see what a damn dire wolf's size is! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Cast....Aw heck I dunno. To many to pick from. Just as long as there's no Sylvester Stallone in there, I'd be happy!

I don't wanna see any of my favorite books on the big screen... it will just ruin it probably.
