Now this can be taboo, religion or maybe the whole book. Sometimes it's someone that gets killed that you don't expect - like the main character. If you don't want to be a spoiler then just mention the book and generally what you found shocking.

For example:

Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series – Tad Williams
Someone dies you really don’t expect.

The infamous rape scenefrom the Thomas Covenant series was pretty shocking to me. I read the book about 7 years ago, when I was 20, and had only read lighter fantasy like Eddings and Tolkien.

Otherwise, there are PLENTY of shocking deaths in the fantasy genre. Perhaps those from Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" were the most shocking to me. The same series shocked me, with Gregor Clegane's brutal behavior, on more than one occasion.

It might be an idea to use some spoiler tags here people...

I think for me there are two things:

The grossest goes to Kushiels Avatar: When Phedre travels to the Land that Died and Lives, and she is admitted into the harem of death. Especially when she and the villan do "nothing that begits life". That freaked me out.

The most shocking plot-wise goes to A Storm of Swords: Two words: Red Wedding.

I agree with Physics Knight regarding A Storm of Swords, just didn't see that coming.

Also what happens to Serwe in The Warrior Prophet, and Xinemus, and what Cnaiur does to Ikurei Conphas in The Thousandfold Thought and when Esmenet gets layed by the skin spy in The Darkness That Comes Before is pretty gruesome.

Have to agree with The Storm of Swords too. George is sure good at the shockers.

SHANNARA SPOILER!

The Jachyra killing Allanon in the "Wishsong of Shannara". For me the Druid was invincible, all-conquering, always watching, always protecting.
Bang! The Jachyra kills him. I was shocked and saddened.

Wasn't shocking, it was a dream come true. The first two books followed identical plot lines, the third followed pretty much the same except for that. I mean come on, that was the only variation in the whole trilogy. (Ps, I put the book down midway through, was so damn boring. Brooks wrote the same story three times :p).

Matter of taste, pal. I love the Four Lands and I loved Allanon. For me it was shocking.

I don't remember witch book it was but it was from Brian Lumley's Necroscope series (one of my favorite Authors by the way). A serial killer who happened to be a necromancer killed his victims then cut holes in their body and then he would stick his thingy in the holes and to make things even worse since he was a necromancer his victims could still feel the pain even after death.
