Any good ones?? Is there such a thing as a stand alone fantasy book?? Or is everything always a trilogy/series??

Terry Brooks' Sword of Shannara was a standalone book and it was really good. Sure, Elfstones and Wishsong were sequels, but it wasn't really a trilogy.

Kristen Britain's Green Rider was also really good. There's a sequel coming out, but again, that doesn't make it a series. The first book can stand all by itself.

One doesn't need to read Lord of the Rings in order to enjoy The Hobbit.

Mercedes Lackey's By the Sword was a single book in her Valdemaar world. Sure, it helps to have read other books in the series to truly understand the world, but it isn't required reading.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head right now, but those should keep you busy for a while http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

I suppose The Hobbit is a stand alone book and as far as I can gather the Redemption of Athalus is as well (although I've never read it). I suppose when authors get the oppertunity to make and break worlds the temptation is too much to resist. Why limit your self to one book in a city when you can write three (or 10+ - Jordan take note) on the end of the world?

Tigana

Grey mane of morning

Rora

Lions of Al-Rassan

Corum:Coming of Chaos (though that could be three volumes in one book, it's a continuing story).

Any books in the 3 series by Stasheff may be read alone. Also, Ed Greenwood, most all of McCaffrey's and any of the "Recluse" series by Modesitt.

Orson Scott card's "Hart's Hope" is a only small book but stands very well on its own.
