I'm curious, why does someone have to die? Can the story not complete itself without the destruction of a main (or at least important) character? Perhaps it would be symbolic if in the end, nobody died. It could be a metaphor to the improving times of the HP world.

My bets are all on Snape, Harry, and Voldemort. They're the three most likely characters. I'm relatively sure that Harry will somehow sacrifice himself in fighting Voldemort: The story would be pointless if he didn't.

I'm not patronizing you here, but could you please explain why it would be so pointless if Harry didn't die? Could the hero not emerge unscathed?

I hate to say that I don't believe that Dumbledore is dead. I think his having a pet pheonix is more than just symbolic, he will rise from the ashes. Call me crazy but I think he will reappear in the next book...at least I hope he does the story just won't be the same without him.

That's an interesting theory, Liathano. I felt the same way about Fawks, but I was pretty certain Dumbledore was dead. That'd definitely be an interesting twist if he came back, and although I didn't think he would actually come back alive, I've had a theory for a while now that we would hear from him in the next book by some means.

As for Harry sacrificing himself... A lot of people seem to think that's what will happen - that it /has/ to happen - but to be honest, to me, the book would be pointless if he did! Personally, I would feel betrayed by the entire series and the author if Harry died for any reason, even noble like that. But that's just me. I HATE when main characters die. I like happy endings, and after following this story for so long, for Harry to die?!?! He earned J.K. Rowling millions, and now its like everybody wants her to kill him! :( That's definitely not a happy ending, even if it does result in Harry destroying Voldemort.

And what about the prophecy? "Neither can live while the other survives." I've had people use that to prove that Harry was going to sacrifice himself, but it sounds to me like either Harry or Voldemort will have to die - not both of them. Whats the point of needing to know how he can't live freely while Voldemort survives if he's going to end up sacrificing himself anyway?

Oh, and, Snape is a good guy :p

I have to agree Avi, too much has been invested for Harry to just die at the end, it just won't fly. I guess JK has got us right where she wants us, right.

I agree about Snape. I think he & Dumbledore are in it together, it was just too easy for Snape to kill him. That's why I think Snape is still good & Dumbledore is still alive. But hey, what do we know.:D

Avi Morgen, I think you bring up 2 very good points there. First of all, it would really ruin my week too if Harry died. Secondly and perhaps more relevantly to this discussion, the prophecy does NOT in fact state that BOTH Harry and Voldemort need die. I just cannot imagine JKR killing off Harry (or Ron or Hermione *see other threads of mine*) after all this time. So many people have grown connected to the young English wizard that it would be something like defacing a role-model. Having said that, I'm not quite aiding JKR in the writing of the book so I can't say anything for sure.

Exactly my thoughts. You'll notice that Draco hesitated in killing Dumbledore - he wasn't going to do it. But if he hadn't he would've probably been killed, or worse. Dumbledore wouldn't have wanted that. He would rather have Snape kill him than rob Draco of a second chance. Many characters think Dumbledore's greatest weakness is giving people a second chance, seeing the good in everyone, but I think that in the end that will turn out to be his strength. It won't be the first time Rowling has led us to believe Snape was the bad guy :p Also, now there is no one left to protect Harry and he has to go in on his own. No parents, no Sirius, no Dumbledore. No one protecting him and inadvertantly (sp?) holding him back from his destiny.

::Edit:: I think I got a bit off topic there. Here's an idea, has anyone thought Neville Longbottom might be the one to die? Or another former member of Dumbledore's Army? Sadly, I'm afraid it might be a Weasley who dies, but if so, I don't think it will be one of the children. Maybe one of the older brothers. But not the twins, Ginny, or Ron.
