By the way, HE informs me that he has been unable to post replies in this thread, for some unknown technical reason. Anybody else having that problem? If so, send me a PM so I can further alert Dag and other interested parties...
Dazzlinkat December 30th, 2006, 09:48 AM Test, test, this is a test of the emergency art critique system. HEHE
Been away for xmas. Monster with a marshmallow heart pic is cool, love the santa lady and the Egyptian scene isn't too bad, either.
Hereford Eye December 30th, 2006, 10:06 AM Attempting again.
Egyptian lady is overwhelmed by architecture making composition a little confusing. Besides that, notice the disdain of the dog statue for the cat that doesn't belong in this picture because Egyptians were not into cats knowing that such animals are untrustworthy, do not requite the affection bestowed on them, and have claws. There should be a dog on the chair.
Woo hoo! I'm back!!!!!!

Radthorne January 1st, 2007, 01:02 AM Thanks, Dazzle!
Ok, boys and girls, now for something completely different to ring in the new year. (Well, not entirely different, just different-er). ( ?) Some of you may recall the graphic novel project, which still awaits (mostly for gobs of available time). And some of you have opined that doing a web comic might be a good first step. Resistance, as they say, is futile; and thus I have succumbed. So, without further ado, please take a gander at my first attempt at a web comic.
Just click on the image below to go read the whole thing:
http://www.sff.net/people/radthorne/DreamGate2/01 Cover.jpg (http://www.kevinradthorne.com/Chapter One.html)
This is Chapter One, with perhaps more to follow. Please keep in mind this is my first try at this, so be kind! I obviously have more to learn (and you can consider this first draft too, as neither text nor pictures have had any particular scrutiny yet).
The page with the story on it works best using Internet Explorer, since it uses a nice fade in - fade out between pictures. It will work in other browsers too, but without the fade, so is a bit more abrupt. Also, I built this to work on my screen, which is maybe larger than average (it's a 20" LCD), so those of you with smaller screens may have to scroll around a bit...
Have fun! :)
Hereford Eye January 1st, 2007, 08:33 AM As usual, the story is excellent, well paced, chock full of interesting ideas and good dialogue, and the camera angles varied enough to keep an entertaining flow. Individual frames can be held up for critique of the art but at this stage of development, you don't need that kind of "help."
I wouldn't be me, though, if I didn't notice the change of hair styles from the past to the present, which is normal enough, but I do wonder if we can attribute the metamorphosis of hair color from brunette to blonde to the acidic rain?
BTW, Dazzler, that very young dude - I recently attained three score and five - cannot be me as I have never worn a beard, never gone without shaving more than 6 days in a row - I'm at 3 today - and would not wear a hat indoors even if it was a Stetson XXX. Ergo, swoyi, and therefore, I think the likeness is more that of BrianC and he is the kind of guy who would let a cat take residence in his lap.
Dazzlinkat January 1st, 2007, 11:46 AM LOL, HE!! You know the cat is there because you over imbibed and if you moved to push it off you'd be on the floor. As for the age difference ... its a trick of the light :p
Rad, love the story so far! Only thing I will point out about the pics, other than the last few, are they are too bright, revealing to much background in too sharp of detail. Great twist, too! And, of course you just HAD to end it right there! Now I gotta wait for more .. guess I will have to razz HE in the meantime.
Pssst! HE, sent you a PM a bit ago about what you had asked, hope you got it
OK, done with secret messages
KatG January 3rd, 2007, 06:31 PM Very nice. Went completely different direction from what I expected. The lady is a little too clean and neat maybe for her first setting (especially if the water is all murky there.) But the story was very nicely set up.
Did you ever check out this site: http://shootingwar.com/index.php It might give you some ideas. It seems to have worked for them. And there are some sites where you might be able to do this besides your own, but I'm afraid I know little about the web comics business.
Radthorne January 3rd, 2007, 09:51 PM Thanks, all! I had a spot of time during the holidays that let me put together a nice string of pictures for this thing. Seemed like something fun to try. Kat, I hadn't checked out that link but have now. They've approached their story, in terms of layout, a bit more traditionally, using panel shapes and sizes to aid in the storytelling. That's something I want to do as well, particularly with the graphic novel project. For this one I was keeping it simple, hence the standard image size for each frame. It actually takes a lot of forethought to work out the panel layout as a function of the storytelling. If I do some more chapters, I will make a starting page for it with links to the chapters, as these folks have done.
And although the new year is already here, I say there's still time to ring it in! :D

And hey, what's all this secret message stuff? Man, we're gonna have to hire some private eyes to dig into this. Sounds meaty. ;)
