Drinking holes...

I was in Southampton yesterday for work, and stumbled across this rather wonderful little pub:

LOL!

Love it...

One thing I have always enjoyed, is the name of taverns and pubs in fantasy, what are your favorites?

Mark Chadbourne's 'Age of Misrule' series is notable in that it is practically a New Age travelogue of Brtain. The protagonists spend most of the books on the move, behing chased or questing over ley-lines crossing the countryside.

One of the devices Chadbourne seems to use is to have them find respite in various pubs, which have become vital hubs of the community as society collapses (the premise of the novels is a breakdown of the modern in the face of the return of ancient gods and godesses and accompanying mysticism).

Anyway, some of the various places the heroes visit are extremely memorable and evocative. I'd love to know how many are actually real places, and how many are fictional.

Maybe I'll mail him and ask!

In real life, some of my favourite pubs:-

The Porterhouse (http://www.porterhousebrewco.com) (Ireland's greatest not-so-small microbrewery, with branches in Dublin and one in London)

The Ship (http://www.pub-explorer.com/surrey/pub/shipcroydon.htm) (Quirky den of SF and fantasy fans, Croydon's oldest pub)

The Claret Freehouse (http://www.claretfreehouse.co.uk) (A fine real ale pub tucked away in the middle of nowhere. Low stone ceilings and a constantly changing menu of real ales[/url]

The Pot Still (http://www.thepotstill.co.uk) (Glasgow's finest pub for single malt whiskey ... with probably the world's second largest collection on offer)

Whilst at uni there were lots of good pubs, what by definition isn't a good pub I guess? But this: http://www.triptojerusalem.com/ was always the most popular tourist wise as it purports to be the oldest pub in Britain, lots of homemade and old ales, some very neat alcove type rooms up accident-waiting-to-happen stairs and it's right next to Nottingham Castle which is also very lovely on a late summer evening :)

And about 10 minutes drive away from Hobbit Towers.... ;)

Thanks for the Photo, Juzzz... nearly as good as the one for my favourite bookshop: A Change of Hobbit bookstore (www.otherchangeofhobbit.com/)...

There used to be a Hobbit pub in Derbyshire.... now sadly gone.

Favorite fictional bar; Callahan's

What I think of when someone says "Tavern": The Purple Pig, in Alamosa, Colorado. I couldn't find a link with a picture, go figure.

Norwich is full of pubs. Absolutely chock a block. And favourites can change over the years so I won't choose one! However the best pub/inn/tavern in fiction in my opinion, is The Inn of the Last Home (?Could have got the name wrong there), the huge tree that is the venue for the opening of Dragons of Autumn Twilight. Gotta love that pub!
