I'm a G1 kid (grew up with Generation 1, original Transformers cartoon from the 1980s) and I loved the original show. I grew up watching the Autobots (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, Prowler, etc..) fight the Decepticons (Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, etc.). I had many of the toys, but have no idea what happened to them. These days they sell for $500+. Oh well!

Anyway, this thread is for any discussion of Transformers. There is an upcoming movie (July 4 2007), being directed by Michael Bay. I had high hopes for the film, but am lowering my expectations now. Images leaked on the net, and the leaked script, have Transformers fans in an outrage. The main complaint is that they're changing them too much, and messing with the look of the characters (e.g. Optimus Prime has a tacky flame job). However, I'm still hoping it will be cool.

My other reason for starting this thread is to gain some more information on Beast Wars (and possibly Beast Machines). I was originally very skeptical of Beast Wars when it came out. But I remember catching about 5 or 6 episodes, in re-runs back in 1999 or 2000. I remember being very impressed with the story lines, and started developing a liking for the show. But then the re-runs stopped and I never saw anymore episodes.

Recently I bought and watched all the original G1 show (Transformers Seasons 1, 2, 3), and now I'm thinking about ordering Beast Wars. It's available at Amazon.com/.ca for at a very cheap price (especially compared to what the G1 DVDs cost). I don't want to download Beast Wars because my hard-drive can't fit the 12 gigabytes, and I prefer DVDs anyway. So I want to know if anyone here watched the show, and whether you recommend buying it. Like I said, I remember enjoying a few episodes. It had a nice feel to it, and the world (despite relatively lame CGI) seemed somehow realistic, almost like I was actually in it as I watched. Should I buy these DVDs?

Feel free to discuss any other Transformers related stuff as well.

(for the record, my favorite Decepticon was Soundwave, and my favorite Autobot was Optimus Prime). :)

Evil, I'm assuming if you haven't seen Clerks 2 yet you soon will. Transformers jokes abound. Enjoy.

Are the jokes referring to next year's Transformers movie? Because if so, that's hilarious. The movie is already getting bashed by fans, but to be ridiculed in another movie, a year before it's release date... wow.

As for the upcoming movie, I think the biggest mistake (apart from the designs) was getting Michael Bay. Isn't he pretty much regarded as a horrible director? Remember that song about Michael Bay and Pearl Harbour, in the Team America film? Plus, apparently Michael Bay was not even a Transformers fan, but he liked the idea of giant robots. One thing that really disgusted me was the set reports, which said he was walking around on set wearing a T-Shirt that says "GIANT F***ING ROBOTS ARE COMING!" (without the ****'s). That's so lame!

But aside from Michael Bay bashing, I'm really curious for information or recommendations regarding Beast Wars, if anyone has some.

I still have high hopes for the new Transformers movie, Michael Bay notwithstanding. Did you see the recent concept images of the Transformers which leaked on the Net? Looked cool I thought. And yes they should be different from the cartoon look, we have advanced 20 years, so has design, they would look silly now.

What has been makde known about the script? Or leaked?

I thought the Beast Wars/Beast Machines cartoons done by Mainframe (the guys that did Reboot) were very well designed, well written, well directed and well voice acted. But I'm not a Transformers purist, so you'll have to take what I say with a grain of salt. Transformers purists seem blase to downright irritated about both these cartoons, but they're continuity porn fetishists about the 80s cartoons. I personally did not grow up with the toys -I think the 80s cartoons are just OK Saturday morning product.

Here's good ol' wikipedia on the Transformers with info on the CGI series:

And I don't think the CGI is lame at all. Who do you think does better CGI animation for television?

ArthurFrayn: And I don't think the CGI is lame at all. Who do you think does better CGI animation for television?I didn't really mean that the CGI on Beastwars was lame. I meant somewhat dated, compared to today's CGI. The world was rather empty, etc... But it looked cool, don't get me wrong!
Mithfânion: Did you see the recent concept images of the Transformers which leaked on the Net? Looked cool I thought. That's definitely the minority opinion there. The images are what's causing the huge uproar in fandom. While there are a few people like you, Mith, who like them, it seems like 90% of the people on any transformers forum are literally foaming at the mouth with outrage! On the official site's message boards, the poor writers who are taking the time to answer fans, are literally being bombarded with rants and complaints!
What has been makde known about the script? Or leaked?Apparently the script has leaked and people have read it. I haven't, but I've gathered a few things. Minor Spoilers for the script: It's apparently too focused on the humans, without enough Transformers. And apparently Megatron only appears at the very end. There are other complaints as well.

They start because of the movie, but are generally about the Transformers themselves. And Go-bots. Funny stuff.

I highly recommend Beast Wars/Beast Machines. The story line, characters, direction and animation for 'Wars' was well done though during the second and third season it begins to curve differently and without spoiling anything the storyline takes on a more prominent role than it did previously. I grew up with G1 but I always felt Wars had a more appealing concept to me; I just wish they had extended the show a bit more to develop some sub plots and the alien exploitation of the planet. Oh well, guess that's what fanfics are for. :P I distinctly remember Dinobot and Megatron being some of my favourites (Rampage and Depthcharge coming in close), both of which were well developed characters and their voice acting was great.

As for Beast Machines, well it was okay but I didn't like it as much. The way they showed the characters and the manner in which they acted was kinda strange compared to what I'm used to them behaving in Wars. =/ The story was alright but again, it didn't impress me too much.

Well, I just ordered the entire BW series from Amazon. I've been splurging on DVDs all summer, this madness has to stop! :D
