I am currently working toward becoming a professional proofreader. In doing so, I need as much practice as I can get. I would, therefore, like to offer my proofreading services free of charge to anyone who is interested.

I would prefer to work on shorter (less than novel-sized) pieces, but would be willing to consider taking on a bigger project.

I would suggest you start with the basics. Look in the writing section for a thread that has the word "critique" in it, open it, follow the links or whatever, read their story, and post what you think about it. This will introduce you to a number of writers at different levels, and more important, it will introduce them to you.
