I just wondered when/how you read books.

Of course it is very variated, but how you read most.
Let me explain... Do you sit or do you lie down? Do you eat or drink something? What room do you read in? How long do you read? etc.

When I do read (Not often these days, sadly. I've been sucked into the world of podcasting) it's almost always in bed, before sleep. I read until I start falling asleep, finish the pararaph, and pick it up the next night.

I usually read in the livingroom lounging on the couch with my head propped on one elbow. Sometimes I read sitting up too, but I only read in the livingroom for some reason. Maybe I know that if I read on my bed I'll just fall asleep.

I like to drink tea when I read or sometimes eat chocolate or fruit, but you can't really eat anything major when reading. I certainly wouldn't want to get grease marks on the pages. :)

I have two kids who keep me pretty busy, and I don't stay up very late at night, which means I don't read for long periods of time. Usually I'll read half an hour, maybe an hour per day whenever I get the chance. I might go two or three days without reading though if I'm busy with other things.

I have a 20 minute commute (one way) on the train to/from work, so I always have a book with me to read when I'm commuting. I sometimes squeeze in another 30 minutes during my lunch hour, too. In the evenings, I'll carry a book around with me, but with my kids it is very hit or miss whether I get to read much. I'm lucky to get 10 or 15 minutes without an interruption of some sort when I'm at home.

Favorite places to read: outside on my patio when the weather is nice. Inside, it is usually either the couch in our den or on my bed. I usually have water or a beverage of some sort with me, too. I try to read each night in bed, but I don't last very long. Maybe 20 to 30 minutes. If it's a really consuming book, I might last an hour. I'm probably an average-to-slow paced reader. I'm certainly not one of those people who can sit down and read a couple hundred pages or more in one sitting. Life just doesn't let me do that very often, and I'm easily distracted.

I have a lot of empty time at work. I've been trying to get myself to read more etext since I spend half my day twiddling my thumbs waiting on other people to get their stuff together, but I can only read on the computer in short spurts.

I've never been able to do what Raule does, reading in a distracting environment like a trip to work or at work. I've always needed a quiet room, preferably dark except for my reading light. In fact, I've gone beyond even that - it seems like I can only read in bed now. That's quite a pleasure, actually, especially when I've got something good to read (just started "Prince of Nothing", and loving it) - going to bed early after a grim day like yesterday (and today :( ) and just relaxing and leaving it all behind...can't wait.

I've always read on the bus, whether it's to school or to work. But that never lasts for more than about 20 - 30 minutes, and it's very frustrating when you reach your stop and have to get off!

In the summer, I occasionally go to a nice park or the beach, and sit under a tree and read.

But most often, I read in bed. I make tea, coffee, or sometimes a glass of wine. I read anywhere from 20 minutes - 2 or 3 hours (if the book is amazing).

Anywhere I can find some peace and quiet. Usually on the couch in the living room with a a glass of water or coffee. I'm pretty good and blocking out the world as I read ie. the kids so I can read for 2-4 hours at a time, if you count time outs for wiping noses, getting food etc.

I'm trying to read Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon right now but am having a really hard time getting into it. I'm 70 pages in now, should I stick with it or give up and find something else?

I'm trying to read Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon right now but am having a really hard time getting into it. I'm 70 pages in now, should I stick with it or give up and find something else?Wow, if I honestly had a nickel for every time someone said these exact words...

This is one of the most common complaints on this forum. Read any of the Erikson threads, in the Erikson sub forum. Pretty much every single person has this problem with GoTM. However, the majority of readers are definitely glad they stuck with it, as the story slowly becomes slightly more understandable. And the series gets better with every book.

It never becomes completely easy, the confusion is part of Erikson's style, but all the subsequent books are much better written. Unless you're hating it, I recommend sticking with it. About halfway through things will really start clicking.

Here are some threads that deal with the same question:

This is pretty new for me actually, I now read mostly on a glorious couch, lots of slouching, lots of biscuits, lots of cushions, it's genius!

Sinking into a corner of the couch, late at night, with a cup of tea, has become the most effective way for me to marathon read a book when I want to get it done these days..
Otherwise, I read wherever and whenever I can.
