SOS...looking for a book!!

I read 2 of 3 books (at least I think the series stopped at 3) while I was in high school in the 90's. I can't remember the author or title of the books, and would love to revisit the 2 I read and finish the series. The story I can remember took place on a different planet that humans had escaped to after some huge disaster on Earth. The main character is some kind of priest or holyman and also a warrior of some sort. The planet they are on has some kind of currents that affect machines or any type of mechanisms, such as guns. The only other character I can remember is a female feline-human type creature that ends up involved in the quest. I know this isn't much, but its all I can really remember, but I know I enjoyed the books and the 3rd wasn't yet published, and I would love to find them. I appreciate any help anyone can give me!

It almost sounds like the Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman. I don't remember a feline human though.

Definitely Coldfire.

The "feline humans" were the planet's natives, which evolved into human-like creatures upon coming into contact with the humans who crashed on the planet.

The first book in the trilogy, Black Sun Rising, is the November Book of the Month :)

and welcome to the forum ;)
especially since you seem to like one of my favorite series, too.
anybody read the other books by friedman? are they any good? are they more sf than fantasy?

Friedman's other books are sf and not as good as the Coldfire trilogy. In Conquest Born is a fascinating psychological military sf novel. I found both the main characters totally despicable but it's not the kind of book that leaves you indifferent.

The Madness Season and This Alien Shore are decent but unremarkable space opera novels. They're not as dark as Coldfire or In Conquest Born. They reminded me a bit of C.J. Cherryh.

Of course Friedman is returning to fantasy next year with her new series. The first book "Feast of Souls" will be published in january by DAW. In the UK Orbit will bring out her new book in april. I have also noticed Orbit is republishing the Coldfire trilogy in the UK. As far as I know it's the first time these novels are published in the UK.

Rumours about her new book are very promising : it's in the same dark and brooding style as the Coldfire novels.

Well, no, I'm not sure it's the same one. The people in Coldfire are colonists who were not escaping an Earth disaster, but had one on their own because of currents of energy, etc., on the planet that turn their human population into a havoc. So that sounds right, and the priest main character, but the rest sounds like something else. Still, worth checking it out and seeing if it is the one you were thinking of, tauny.

Coldfire is technically sf, though on the flimsiest of pretexts. Fantasy fans usually enjoy it too.

It sounds like you hit the nail on the head! I looked up the titles you gave me and they do sound familiar. And as far as how the humans ended up on this other planet, I'm not sure about that part. It has been over 12 years since I've read these books. If the coldfire trilogy isn't what I'm thinking of, I believe I will enjoy reading them! I've ordered them and can't wait to revisit and finish the series. Thanks for the welcome too. I hate to disappoint you, but I unfortunately don't get much time for reading anymore, being the mother of 2 very active little girls. But I would love to find more time to dip into other worlds again. Thanks a lot!
