Well, since the favorite series and the favorite books/authors categories have already been taken, then therefore I will start a new topic, this one dealing with authors(again). What is everyones favorite author, and why does everyone like them? Was there some interesting theory, or a special theme that appealed to you? If so, then reply and say why you like them.

I don't know that I can even pick a fav. author. There are so many good writers that it would seem unfair to single out just one of them.

I have to say for pure reading enjoyment, I like Robert Jordan. His WoT series is on such a large scale, and has a history so deep that its easy to be caught up in it.

I agree with DP above my fav though is, as I've said Katherine Kerr. Her characters are all (the humans at least) based on Celts who fled the Roman Empire and came through magical means to the world of Deverry. They seem to me to be gritty believable people and are portrayed warts and all. Also the use of magic is a new angle, or one I've not come across before and the reincarnation of individual souls with their fate tied up in unremembered past lives is a nice idea. I also like Melanie Rawn, very different from KK, a light and airy world but with well constructed characters. She seems to be able to keep the mood light but still write in a movig manner.

Hey Briggsy, when you refer to Melanie Rawn are you speaking of her The Dragon Prince Series and Dragon Star Series. I've read the second series but not the first because someone gave it to me for Christmas and I didn't realize they were connected with each other. I did enjoy it and am thinking of going back and reading the first. I must admit that I read the 1st book of the Exiles series and wasn't very impressed. Don't know exactly what it was, but it just didn't reach out grab me.

If anyone is looking for a new author to get into I would suggest checking out Legends edited by Robert Silverberg. It has short stories from 11 authors that give you an insight of their style of writing and a peek inside the worlds they have created.

Zeddicus

I'd have to say my all-time favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien. For more recent authors I would have to go with Terry Goodkind. His strength being his characters.

Right down the list would be.

Jordan
Eddings
Feist
Brooks
Martin

Bilbo

I think I would say that Jordan is my favourite author. With the Wheel of Time series he has built a truly amazing world, and I think his writing style is way better than most others.

Stephen Donaldson. His themes are very complex and adult, not just sexuality-related. His stuff is very mature and well-thought out.

I would have to say that my favorites ;not in any particular order are Mercedes Lackey, Lynn Flewelling, Lawrence Watt-Evans,Angus Wells, Feist and David Eddings.

In this genre there are so many wonderful authors...it is hard to pick a favorite. I agree with Briggsy and Zeddicus that characterization is most important. You know it was a great book when you are sad you've finished it. Books by Orson Scott Card, Robin Hobb and David Eddings consistantly make me feel that way.

hello all, first post on this forum. YAY for me.

don't have one set-in-stone favorite author, but at the moment it's Marion Zimmer Bradley. i'm reading her Avalon trilogy (Forest House, Mists of Avalon, Lady of Avalon and there's a fourth book that i have yet to find) and it kicks serious ass. i've never ben a fan of historical fanatsy but damn, MZB is changing my mind. and in a hurry at that.

K.
