After some recommendations i read on this board for David Gemmell's books i picked up Legend, the first in the drenai saga, i finished the book today and i must say that it was one of the best fantasy books i ever read and i can't wait to read some more Drenai books, i will have to wait until my next order from amazon.com because they are not sold where i live (Israel).

I think people who liked Robin Hobb, Glen Cook or George R.R. Martin will love David Gemmell, less so people who like authors like Terry Goodkind, Melanie Rawn or Jenny Wurts. People who like less emotions descriptions and more action and realistic battles and characters will love it.

Your freakin' A on that one FitzChivalry... I think his absolute best are the 'Waylander' books.

I think he has done some books on the Macedonian Empire, although I have not read these, I don't think they are fantasy in the usual sense, more historical novels.

I also enjoyed Legend, although I read it some time ago. I believe one or two of the books after it were alright also-although Legend was by far the best.

Other books of his did not hold my interest.

His work is unparalleled in consistency and quality. The man could write and he infused meaning into his work. It is hard to mention a "favorite".
My favorite book was the last Waylander novel: Hero in the Shadows. A perfect ten.
Sword in the Storm is also great as is Winter Warriors.
As a series, I love the Jon Shannow books because that character spoke to me. There are also some passages of beautiful, concise prose (something he was never given enough credit for).
I've read every book the man has written. Rare for me.
It's took bad he passed away.
A huge loss for fantasy.
He will be missed....

This, I think, is the best description of his writing. It is poetry in many respects, though more for its focus than literary excess.

Only just found out about David Gemmell passing away... I was, am quite a big fan of his work, I think I own pretty much all of his books and am currently reading Troy.

It's such a shame.... I was hoping he'd return to the Drenai after this current series but I suppose that world has died with him.

I believe his wife is going to finish off the remainder of the final Troy book.

That's my problem too--very dependent on Amazon. I bought Lion of Macedon and didn't finish it. I might get Legend on my next order.

I started with Lion of Macedon and loved it so then read all his books up to date. Loved them all, he's my favourite fantasy author. A tragedy that there will be no more after the Troy trilogy.

Another vote for Gemmell here - I've now read most but not all. Simple, well written, keeps your interest.
