What is with you guys who are always bagging Jordan? Sure he's a little bit longwinded and his books are boring in some parts.
But take into consideration The return of the King book 3 of LOTR. It was so incredibly boring that it took me 3 months to read it (the 1st and 2nd took me about a week each). And it's considered to be the best of the lot. Jordan is much better than Tolkien, he is by far the superior writer. I'm not saying i dislike Tolkien, on the contrary i think his first 2 books were awesome, but he doesn't deserve the title of greatest fantasy writer anymore. That title belongs to Jordan. The title i would give to Tolkien is The most original and imaginative writer who ever lived. after all he did create the genre.

It's all opinions, my friend. I don't even think that Jordan is that good of a storyteller. I hated his Conan books and gave up on his WOT series some time ago. I think he's a good writer in that he can write the english language with near perfect grammar and spelling, but his storytelling skills leave a lot to be desired. So, in the end, the above is my opinion. I won't try to change anybody's minds with it but it is still there.

like macros said, it's all a matter of opinion, but to say that Jordan is a superior writer to Tolkein (in my opinion) is ridiculus. neither the writting skills nor the world RJ created come even close to the originality ad the depth of Tolkein's Midworld. have ou read The Sirmarilion?
I read LOTR about three times so far and i'll read it some more. I can't wait for the WOT to be over. just my opinion though http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Return of the King took me about 3 days to finish. Lord of Chaos took me about 6 months of forced reading when I felt up to tolerating more Jordanish drivel. *shrug* Thankfully, since LOC Jordan seems to have recalled that a plot that actually moves forward helps keep a reader's interest. All the same, the Tolkien debate is present for all to read on the thread entitled 'Sorry Tolkien fans'

Well,Jordan is boring, boring and again boring.Tolkien is a very good author, but I think that Ray Feist is the best author, however that I like Brooks characters the most.

I, personaly, don't like Tolkien all that much -I like him thought! Ana he has CREATED the fantasy genre. He is the master. So I take of my hat and bow to him...
That's all. You cannot even compare Tolkien and RJ. The only thing you can say is RJ copied Tolkien in many, many things.

Well it's all a matter of taste. But one thing i want to mention is that the whole LotR is about as long as book 7 and 8 of Wot together. I find it hard to understand how one can find the LotR boring compared to that, but then it's your basic right to puzzle me http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif.

Bagging on Robert Jordan is what makes this country great. I agree for the most part I'm entertained, but the man refuses to summorize, and that's what drives me nuts. I don't care when Mat and Rand are walking to the city *book 1* and about how hungry and poor they are. My god, did that drag on.
Add the covers to the story . . . it's poetic justice.
And regaurding the LotR . . . I read the first book, and I remember falling asleep many times, the paperback slipping from my fingers and bouncing onto the ground.
Yeah, that's right. I didn't like it and don't see what the big deal is. I know, I know. "How dare you!"
What can I say? It's my opinion.
PS, OH, and I
hate the Beatles!
Serious.

Azurehero, I am no tgoing to say "How dare you" but what i will do is ask you this.
how old were you when you read LoTR?
did you read 'The Hobbit'?
i'm asking this because i also found the first book rather boring with all the walking and the landscapes etc. whhen i first read it as a kid , but i gave it another shot later on and i couldn't put it or the books that follow it down.
of course you can think what ever you want but i believe that as a fantasy fan you are missing out on the Mother of all fantasy,
and that's a shame really.
give it another shot and let yourself be absorbed in the biggest, most elaborate world ever created.
