About 25 years ago, I read a book that had a plot along these lines:
A wounded soldier, near death, is restored to life by a friend/mentor scientist.
This scientist had found a portal to an alternate universe (world?) where life was based on silicon, not carbon. The inhabitants of the world are terrorized by a monster that no one can fight.
With this in mind, the scientist makes the repairs to the soldier in such a way as to give him great power on this alternate world, in the hopes that he will go there and defeat the creature.
Before they can do this, the scientist is murdered.
Eventually, the soldier learns of the scientist's plan, and finds his way to the other world, does battle with the creature, and wins.
If you know the title of this book, or the author, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks in advance,
Matt Gessner
