OK, John R.R. Tolkien is a great author, but I think that Terry Brooks is better. His characters are more interesting{Allanon to Gandalf f.ex.} and the Evil is more scary.
Raymond E. Feist isn't" far away" to Tolkien ,too.

Just because Feist pulled one or two decent books out of his butt doesn't make him a great author. Most of his work is below average at best. And I would say Brooks is less interesting than Feist also. However, their good books to start out with if you are just beginning in fantasy. But they are very predictable and lose their appeal rather quickly.

This discussion has even less relevant than the Tolkien - good or bad discussion.... it's totally subjective and you won't convince each other... so i suggest stopping it now.

Terry brooks isn't that great. He provides solid material, but can't compare with the epics that people create these days.

In the begining god made Tolkien
but knowing he could do better
he made the perfect author
and FEIST be his name.

but as they say thats only MY OPINION

Of the fantasy authors that I have read NONE (IMHO) are MORE unorginally derivative of Tolkein than Brooks. That said, Sword of Shannara was a fairly enjoyable book, but I could not get past the blatant, obvious similarities to LotR. Just my opinion.

I do think, however; that he is an important figure in Fantasy literature because his books brought a great deal of new readers to the genre when first published.

Brooks writes excellent battle scenes...but no matter what, whether one loves him or loathes him, you cannot deny he virtually plagiarised LOTR in SWORD OF SHANNARA. almost every event is parallelled.
And why did he call his druid Allanon? As one wit put it 'does he have a drinking problem then?'

Well, when I wrote this topic I was young and stupid...now I'm only stupid.
Now I think that Brooks is more interesting, but not better than Tolkien. My favourite author definetly is Raymond E. Feist. Look his characters.Look his battles.
Look his misterious bad guys[the Pantatians].
Second...I will say Robert Jordan. It is true that his last books are boring, but I reread
"The Eye of the World",and I see that it is great.Third is Tolkien.4th-Brooks,5th-LeGuin,6th-Eddings,7th-Goodkind,8th-Moorcock,9th-Zelazny,10th-Pratchett[without his last books].
