We finished the 20th century...now we are in new century, but who is the best from old?
Here is my list...
1Raymond Feist
Great characters, great story.I love his books.
2John R.R. Tolkien
The most important author in genre.I think that he infact wrote faery tales[look "the Hobbit" or "Farmer Gils of Ham],but they are great
3Terry Brooks
"The Sword of Shannara" was the first bestseller from this genre...like Tolkien he is writing great faery tales.
4Robert Jordan
His first books are great. The last are just good, but RJ is really good author.
5Ursula K. LeGuin
6David Eddings
7Michael Moorcock
9Terry Goodkind
10Fritz Leiber

I think the most Influencual fantasy author of the 20th century was Tolkien.
But Hitler was also the most influencual man of the 20th century so influence can mean a number of things.
The best of Author of the 20th century in my opinion was Robert Jordan.
I noticed Allanon that you don't have Stephen Donaldson on your list. Either 1)he was number 8, 2)you haven't read him yet or 3)you have no idea what your talking about.
only my opinion.

Im picking either number 1 or 3, probably 3. But the man did mention jordan so ill forgive him haha.

Obviously I rekon Jordan to be the best fantasy writer of the 20th century, but if George R martin had started a little earlier, well.....

Tolkien, but only just... Donaldson is on a par with him IMHO.

Well I would have to say the Bibble was and still will be for a fair while anyway the most influencual book of the 20th century even if you do not agree with it,you can not deny it is a very powerful book to a lot of people.

Rupert... are you saying the Bible was a work of Fantasy?

Because I may be wrong here... but I think the topic is asking which is the best work of fantasy fiction of the 20th centuary, I am assuming this because it is a FANTASY forum

Ohh hang on... the Bible does not count, it was published before the 20th centuary.

The only two authors I have found to be both brilliant and entertaining are George R.R. Martin and Robin Hobb. There is still quite a bit I havn't read though. The more I read other literature the more I see fantasy lacking. It is still by far the most interesting genre to me though.

My favorite author is Roger Zelazny.

The bible was written over a long period and the first parts of it were written 3500 years ago....

And i don't think Hitler influenced that much on the 20th century, he made a big war sure, but later he didn't have much influence, Stalin had more influence, and you might want to name Albert Einstein too.
