I'm trying to find out the name/author of a sci-fi story I read many years ago; I don't think it was a book but part of a compliation of stories.

The plot was (roughly) as follows: The main character lives in a country surrounded by 4 high walls, and he wants to build a glider/plane to escape. He's harrassed by the local town bullies, who even damage his aircraft as he's about to use it. He crashes and lands atop the wall. The next day, someone from *outside* the wall lands and greets him and tells him that the wall was a test of sorts.

Any assistance or a pointer to a story plot search engine I don't know about would be very much appreciated! :)

Soundsa lot like "The Wall of Darkness" by Arthur C. Clark. I came across it a couple of years ago in the "Collected Stories of" anthology.

It's in "The Other Side of the Sky" too.

I don't think this is the story that mbaesq is looking for.

In Clarke's story there is only one wall. The main charcter is a very rich landovner, and to surmount the wall he hires a famuos architect to construct a gigantic ramp to the top. There are no gliders anyway in it. And no bullies. When he reach the top of the wall no-one is there to greet him - that is a part of the point of the story.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other guesses as to which story it might be instead.

It might be *The Wall Around the World* by Theodore R. Cogwell. The title certainly fits, but it's been so long since I read it that I can't remember the plot.
