I would like to know what everyone thinks of the Harry Potter books. I recently (Christmas) got my 4 1/2 year old daughter the first book so that I could read it to her as a bedtime story. I was pretty exited to be able to introduce fantasy to her at such a young age. I have only read the first 2 chapters so far, so I can't really say how good it is going to be.

Any opinions on the books themselves or on the impact they may have?

I really like them. I think that they are fun and entertaining. there are some poeple who think they should be banned from schools because they are about wizards, witches and magic; however I will let my kids read them when I some. My roommates is going to read them so that she can relate to the third graders she will be student teaching next semester.

My wife got me into the Harry Potter books--I like them alot. They are a fun and good read. What is good about the books is that Rowling does not really dumb down the books to the kids.

My uncle read the first couple of books with my cousin who is in first grade.

And hey, if they are getting kids to read...

I've read Harry Potter books and I can say they are pretty good even for people of an older age... and I really wished I had something like that while I was younger...
And the language and plot are well made for kids, so I would recommend this book.

Well, I've read books 1, 3 & 4 (book 2 wasn't available readily http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif and thoroughly enjoyed them. I agree (with one proviso) that they're entirely suitable for children to read, but also sufficiently interesting for adults too. My proviso is the way book 4 finished up. Perhaps it's just me but the tone of the books seemed to get a lot darker. For the first time He who can't be named did violence and murder 'on camera'. It doesn't bother me personally but I'd have to think before I gave book 4 to a young child.

Thanks for all of the input. I really appreciate it. I'll have to read the whole series to my daughter. Hopefully she will enjoy them as much as I hope I will.

trask5-

I would hold off on reading her book 4. As others have mentioned, it is pretty dark.

I am currently reading volume 3, i was through the first ones in three days, thats really fast for me. I like the Harry Potter books very much, and I admire all the details she brings up (honestly, I never thought that there were different types of broomsticks and that there could be any difference in speed, steadiness and such things). I think it lovely for children and very amusing for elder people.
Everybody go on and try them!

Brill, Brill, Brill. What more can I say!!!!!

Did anyone pay the extra money for the adult covers?!!!! Not me - any way to save money me!!! Why some people would be ashamed to be reading "kids" books is beyond me.

But keep on writing them , because I will keep on reading!!
