From what i've read in these forums it seems that only a minority of us have read Janny Wurts' amazing Wars of Light and Shadow. Stunning characters, superb description and an ORIGINAL PLOT have made this series one of the best i have ever read. Well.......it's not really that original, the classic elements of fantasy are there but it really does stand out from the rest of the fantasy series out there. HAS ANYONE READ IT??????
And if you have, what do you think?

PS i can't wait until the next issue is published..........

I started reading the first book a few years and just couldn't get into it. I found the story very slow moving ana a bit cliched, but that could just be me. Would you recommend persevering? http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

Definitely. True it is a bit sluggish in the beginning but once you get into the middle it is really addictive i literally couldn't put it down (i am not exaggerating). Go to www.paravia.com (http://www.paravia.com) and go to the chatroom to see how crazy Janny Wurts has made some fans, about this series. What i don't understand however is why so few people have read it?

I struggled through the first book of that series like 2 years ago and finished it in a great show of will power, man that book was so boring... the most boring fantasy book i ever read probably.

Since then i'm avoiding this series like fire.

Heya,
Wel, I just finished 'Fugitive Prince' last night. The series definitely has a lot of originality and some interesting characters. I can understand why some readers find it slow-going I have to admit. Still an enjoyable read for the most part though IMO. One thing that really annoys me is that Dakar (the drunk prophet) never seems to be able to see past doxies and drink. Given his circumstances during most of the book I would have thought any living being would have developed more.

The first book in that series is one of the few fantasy books that I have not been able to finish. I found it boring, trite, and sluggish. Of course this is all IMO, but I didn't think it was worth struggling through.

Giarc,
Have i spelt your name right? aplogies if i haven't but i'd like to ask who is your favourite character? I like Arithon but he's a bit too perfect-seeming. i mean have you found any faults in his character? i LOVE lysaer even his name is great. i can't pinpoint why i do so could you help?

This is easily my favourite series. An interesting world with an amazing depth, interesting characters, it's got it all.
I can see why people would struggle through the first half of the first book, but after that the series just takes off.
Janny also managed to break what was seeming to be a loop of Arithon vs Lysaer with two big armies and a win taking place through some brilliant strategy.

I liked the books of Feist/Wurts (Kelewan) so much that I ordered all her books afterwards. I must confess that I was disappointed.I read the whole series so far, it's not b a d - but she should have left out the overdetailed desription of every rock, plant and sound.
I will go on reading the series but how long will it still take? The whole war is supposed to last 500 years and after so many fat books we're still only - how many?- I think about 15 years on.
I also hated Dakar!!!! She should put more stress on the lovestorys. It' s a shame that Lysaers wife died. I'm still hoping she comes back to life. I also love the witches.
On the whole she is much better in describing female characters than male characters. The males are always so depressed and tragic.
One of my favorite female characters is Mara in the Kelewan-Saga

Maya, yep...you spelled the name right. To be honest I think my favourite character would be the koriani witch who's in love with Arithon. Mainly because she's not on camera long enough to annoy me with whining. I like Arithon (on balance) but I get sick of the overdone depression thing (I know its part of the compassion gift he has but compassion for individuals shouldn't be allowed to overwhelm compassion for many). It's time he just got on with life...stiff upper lip and all that!
