Best Books of 2000 (? Poll for members of this board?)

Pages : [1] 2 3

Since 2000 is coming to a close, maybe we can take an informal poll here to determine what the people of this board thought was the best book of 2000.

I would like to keep this simple so the minimal critera is as follows: (1) you actually read the book and (2) It was published in 2000 (U.S. Edition?). This can be either the first Hardcover edition or the first paperback edition (for the paperback to qualify, it has to be the First paperback edition i.e. while the hardcover of Mad Ship was first published Hardcover in 1999, the paperback was published in 2000, so it could be counted).

Pick three books that you enjoyed the most: 5 points for the best book, 3 points for 2nd best book and 1 point for 3rd best book such that:

1) Book A by John 5 points
2) Book B by Rob 3 points
3) Book C by Mike 1 point

Let's shoot around some ground rules for a few days (let's try to keep this as simple as possible, if what I laid out above is too much, let me know) and then maybe we can start the poll next week and run it until the second week of January.

I can tally the votes and post the top 3 books as chosen by the members of this BB after the cut off date (that we can establish after the rules are set.

Rules sound simple and fair enough for me, so I'll go ahead and throw in my votes:

1) Ship of Destiny by Robin Hobb. I simply can't say enough good things about Hobb.

2) Dragons of a Fallen Sun by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The best darn story-tellers out there today.

3) Ashes of Victory by David Weber. Ok, I figured I would start the first controversy by naming a sci-fi book even though this is the fantasy forum.

I don't there will be a problem with a sci-fi book, I pretty much posted the poll in the Fantasy forum because it has the most traffic (and I like 'fantasy' better than 'science fiction'.)

That said, maybe at least ONE book of the three should be fantasy or ONLY ONE can be Science Fiction?

Hey...great idea Fitzflag! Shame I haven't read any new releases this year. Still reading a lot of stuff released in the least 3 or 4 years....
Will be interested to see the results http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif

1) Storm of Swords

That's the only book I have read that I would award points...although I havn't read much new fantasy to be honest.

While I have read Goodkind's and Jordan's latest endeavors there are only two authors who I'd offer for this year's best books:

1)A Storm of Swords G. R.R. Martin

and

2)Lord of Emperors Guy Gavriel Kay

1. Storm of Sword - Martin

2. Winter's Heart - Jordan

Those are the only two that I can say for sure came out in 2000 that I've read.
