i've got a friend who reads stuff like sense and sensibility and i'd like to make her one of us, a fantasy reader. the problem is i don't know which book i should recommend. i thought about lord of the rings but i thought it was too longwinded for a beginner and i'm just on the brink of recommending pawn of prophecy. anyone got any ideas about which book i should recommend?

How about Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay?
It's a stand alone only 600 pages, poetic language strong female characters, a bit of romance, it should please an Austen fan.

I just finished Tigana a couple of days ago, not a bad choice to start with.
I liked the story a lot, but the language was a bit too flowery and descriptive for me.

I would recoment the Dragonlance Chronicles. Nothing better to start with. Complex plot (but not tiring), characters that live, epic scenes, nice love stories. Everything to attract someone to the fantasy genre.

Give em "A Game of Thrones" I'm sure that will get virtually anyone into Fantasy books.
