Has anyone read Ri, Ji'jinn Station, and Alism. They are a trilogy free online fantasy/sci-fi novels?

hmmm....smells like somebody fishing for free advertisement. Something which is against SFFWorld policy.

I do not sell or endorse any particular book or merchandise. I'm simply trying to tell SF and F readers about an interesting book trilogy online. I'm not affiliated with the author, Laurel Hickey, or the trilogy.

I'm simply a devoted fan.

A summary from the official site (www.2morrow.bc.ca/eyeofocean) follows:

"Thirty-five years ago, the Empress Cassa did 'something' and turned a good chuck of the palace - and herself - to granite. Of course, nobody thinks she's really dead. And nobody thinks she's still quite human either. The problem? The transformation into granite didn't stop with the palace. Empire is in danger of being destroyed.

Meet Ulanda, a young woman born and trained to be a safe replacement for the Empress, allowing Cassa the freedom she wanted while saving the Empire from destruction. And meet Garm, Cassa's lover who never stopped loving her - or waiting for her to come back.

And she has come back."

Great books, great characters, great series.

The problem is that we get a lot of these "devoted fans" who are new members to the site, wanting just to tell us about so and so, and they quite often turn out to be the author or a pal of the author, who has the neat idea to pose as a disinterested fan and try to start viral marketing or some other new trendy technique, which are basically different varieties of spam.

And members, running into this a lot, don't buy it, and get pretty suspicious of such endorsements. And we volunteer staff, if we confirm that's what going on -- that you're violating the rules you agreed to follow here -- we'll kick you off the site. Just so everybody's clear on this.

That being said, darth, we'll give you the benefit of a doubt. The books do sound interesting. What do you like about them yourself? What else do you like to read? Come and have some conversations with us, and lay our concerns to rest.

I like the books because of the "wheels-within-wheels" plot. Myriad characters interact realistically and convey powerful emotions to the reader. Ulanda, Garm, and the other characters are not perfect beings: they have human traits and flaws. I was reminded of the DUNE books plot-wise when I first read them, because all the characters influence the plot and eventual outcome of the story. An aspiring fantasy writer, I have used these books to set the bar for my own writing.
