A question that I have about certain content in fantasy books.

This may not be an appropriate topic to discuss on this message board to some people, so if you moderators don't approve of it let me know and I'll apologize and you can lock my topic, but I've read some fantasy books in the past that were absolutely awesome and I thoroughly enjoyed, such as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. But, in the past I have read a few fantasy books in which I found explicit sexual content which I find hard to read because it bothers me. One example of such a book that has such content is The Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore. The reason I am telling you this is I would like someone here, if they would be so kind to please inform me of some enjoyable, adventurous, sword-and-sorcery type fantasy books that don't have any sexually explicit themes in them. I would dearly appreciate it. By the way, I am able to tolerate suggestive themes, though. And some good fantasy books I've been informed of by others are the fantasy books by David Eddings, The Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn Trilogy, and the Dragonriders of Pern Series. I would really appreciate it if some of you could possibly inform me of some others. Thank You.

From what I have read, there are not a large number of books which are sexually explicit. You can find many books that will suit you, such as The Belgariad series by Eddings or anything by Weis and Hickman.

Would the Dragonlance series suit me?

I believe it would suit you. The books are not sexually explicit, and they are interesting, for the most part.

DragonLance (Chronicles and Legends) would be fine. I haven't read the The Dark Elf Trilogy but I did read Icewind Dale Trilogy by the same author (and Drizzt) and I really didn't see any sexual overtones.

I would AVOID Terry Goodkind and George R.R. Martin.

Um, Charles, you said anything written by Weiss and Hickman would suit me, but I read on barnesand noble.com that book 1 of the Sovereign Stone Trilogy, Well of Darkness has sex in it. Are they referring to explicit sex or just brief mentions?

Hi. I think the Deverry series by Katherine Kerr would be OK. There is a strong romantic theme and some "implied" sex, but I dont recall any graphic or explicit sexual content. However, since its not something that offends me I just may not have noticed any. I think the books of Michelle West would be OK too. there is a duology called "Hunter's Oath" and "Hunter's Death"..then a "tie-in" series Called "The Sun-Sword"...but again, since I am not botheres by sexual content, I may have overlooked something. Maybe someone else who reads this post can ofer an opinion?
AND DEFINATELY stay away from Goodkind and Martin. Although GRRMartin is (arguably)the best writer in fantasy these days there is quite a bit of very difficult sexual content and it may not be appropriate for everyone.

The Michelle West books previously mentioned would probably be a good pick. There are some sexual overtones but nothing explicit. There is a series titled A Wizard in Rhyme by Christopher Stasheff that is also fairly free from any sexual content. Piers Anthony's Xanth series is also pretty PG in nature with some sexual content but very low key and humorous.
Some more authors to stay away from if you don't want graphic sexual content: Anne Bishop, Laurell K. Hamilton, Lisanne Norman, and Guy Gavriel Kay.

It has been a while since I read them... but I think the Shannara books by Terry Brooks should be okay as well... I can't recall any explicit sex in them...

Personally I can't remember many fantasy books with explicit sexual material, although Martin certainly has some. Somebody mentioned Kerr though, and I know there is a scene in the first book with some sexual content. Most fantasy I would think you could just skip the sex parts, though, since they are generally very minor and short.

Do you feel the same way about movies? If so, that must be much more difficult.
