...to your favourite fantasy author?
I did, when I was 14. Wrote to David Eddings and he never answered. That really pissed me off.
What was your experience?

I've written emails to some authors and most have responded:
Matthew Stover
John Marco
Kristen Britain
Robin Hobb
I wrote to Kate Elliott, but I haven't received a response yet.
Oninons, check this older thread for other member's fan mail experience: Authors that respond to emails/letters? (http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001302.html)

I've written e-mails to several authors and have always received replies. It's probably easier for the authors to shoot off an e-mail to a fan than to write a real letter. Heck, there is no probably about it. It IS easier. Though, I suppose, there must be authors out there who don't answer e-mails. Of course, if they don't want to answer e-mails they probably don't post their addy.
I'm really happy b/c I just won a signed copy of a book from juliet Marillier after submitting a couple of book reviews to her site. Thanks Mith, for pointint out that site to me.

I wrote to Katherine Kurtz once, but never heard back from her. I was very disappointed. I admire her immensely!

When I was 12, I wrote to susan Cooper. A LONG letter. She wrote me back personally saying her daughter had read my letter and told her she needed to write me back herself. And she called me a special reader cause I'd noticed Hawkin at the end of the series. Wow. I was a NUT. I have since lost that letter in the two moves my parents have made. I'm PISSED. It really meant soooooo much to me!
I've also emailed Robin Hobb and Tad Williams and got quite cool personal responses. I tried writing stephen r. donaldson but never mailed off the letter!

Actually, having read that earlier thread, I did send little email notes to several authors: Michelle West, Martha Wells, David Drake, and Paul Kearney.
Except for West, they all responded. Unfortunately, I think I put my foot in my mouth with Drake though. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/redface.gif

I've sent a real letter to Terry Goodkind, about eight weeks ago. I havent gotten a response yet. Maybe Tor never sent it on or maybe he gets too much mail. I'm not sure.
I've emailed/or gotten emails from: Margaret Weis, Kevin James Kage, and Richard Knaak.
I've talked on newsgroups to: John Grubber and Chris Pierson.

Elan Morin Tedronai - Is that Jordan's real name or an alias?

Crysania, that is so cool! I'm jealous...
estranghero, oh please tell us: how did you put your foot in your mouth?
You guys are probably right, I'd probably have more success with an e-mail than a letter.
Do you think authors like Jordan enjoy getting fan mail? Or is it just an arduous burden? I mean, he must be getting tons of letters from people like us.
