Ok I know that this is a bold question to ask what with there being a host of top women fantasy writers, but for anyone who has read the Axis Trilogy and the Wayfarer Redemption Trilogy by Douglass you will know that the question is not that hard to answer.
I think she is the most original story teller there has been in a long time, what with her story line and her cast of brillient yet belivable characters,i could go on for ever.If you have not read theses books yet i strongley recommend you buy them and read them now.
Anyone agree with me?
or dissagree with me?
I would like to hear from anyone else who has read her books.

I have been seeing good things about Sara Douglass on the net for some time. Tor is publishing her Wayfarer series--I think early 2001. I am looking forward to reading her.
Since I can only judge the good writers by who *I* have read, for now Robin Hobb stands upon the throne as Queen of Fantasy Writers read by yours truly. The late Marion Zimmmer Bradley was very good as well.
Elizabeth Haydon is fine new writer as well, but is surpassed by Robin Hobb.

I agree about Robin Hobb, the Farseer was superb.
C.S. Friedman is great too.

C.S. Friedman is really good. I like a map to go with the story though. That'd be my one complaint with her.
We all have our favorites, but I think that labeling any author a King or Queen is dangerous. I think by doing that we add an unnecessary level of compitition among autors.
Besides, Melanie Rawn is the Queen.

I think Friedman is very good as well, I just finished This Alien Shore last week and it was pretty good, thought provoking. I read Coldfire over the summer and thought it was top-notch as well.

I too enjoy the Farseer series. But to me it seamed that she rushed her ending in Assassin's Quest and sort of lost the plot. But other then that the books were a great read.I also liked J.V.Jones and her series The Book of worlds but at times her plot got a bit mixed up in the book Master and Fool. i know of a web site were you can order Sara Douglass books i will get the right addy and post it for you all

Two Words:
Janny Wurts
But an honourable mention to Kate Elliot.
You think being an Aussie I'd have read Sara Douglas? It looks like I'll have to add her to my must read list. Her books are in all the bookshops around here.

Rupert Avery, I've read the Axis Trilogy and The Wayfarer Redemption and i thought it wasnt as good as you make it out to be..
I thgouht the Axis trilogy was good, but i found that it fell apart with the second trilogy..
I just thought the writing was WAAAAYYY too unbelievable... some of the stuff she writes is really cheesy and makes you cringe..
all that "i love you" stuff...
but i suppose if you really like ALOT of (cheesy) fantasy then go for it...
it just didnt have the depth of characters you get from other authors and the plot is ooohhh soooo predictable...
but one good thing, i thought the map was nice! http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/smile.gif
