I think i read in a mag that all the old playstation games will work on the ps3 but by accident or on purpose some dont work properly. aparantly the sound doesnt work on some games. Will this mean i have to buy a new Ps2 as well as a ps3 so i can play all my games?
(ps2 lens is going hope it lasts untill i have FF12)

If you're intent on buying a PS3 then no I don't imagine you'll need a new PS2, some of the games didn't work for PS3 initially or were experiencing a range of glitches but they have been/are being fixed. The US website has a game engine you type into to see what games were affected: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus but I'd imagine most of them will be fine by the time of the UK launch. TBH I'd wait like six months before buying a PS3 just to see how the machine goes, if it doesn't have any good titles then it's a lot of money just to play your PS2 games. My info was from here amongst other places: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=149422

As if to prove Sony can mess up anything, the UK version will have limited backwards compatability: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=158696 seems Sony have ditched the chip that ran the PS2 games to cut costs, which haven't been passed onto the consumer, and are now doing what they slagged Microsoft off for doing - software emulation, just not as good. Sorry Gollum.

I'm guessing this is likely the same for the other PS3 versions sold elsewhere? Maybe they think people who like PS2 games will just buy a PS2? They still sell more PS2s than PS3s last I heard. I myself might consider buying a PS2 even after all this time but I guess the PS3 can wait till the next generation of consoles come out or a more compelling buy becomes available. More likely I'll upgrade my computer. Without backwards compatibility with the strong PS2 game library Sony's throwing away one of their big advantages over Xbox 360 or the Nintendo Wii.

I don't think it applies to the US or Japan, definitely UK and Europe but unclear on, Africa, Oceania etc - I assume it will be the same. I got the news item from here: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=158696 if you read it Sony put a horrendous amount of spin on the whole thing, which is really just further proof of how little they think of the other regions. Personally I have a 360, having a blast on Crackdown at the moment, and am not considering buying a PS3 probably ever despite being a huge fan of PS1 and PS2, Sony have completely put me off and not even MGS4 will change that now.

I love how they're not even opening up the site to check which games will work until the launch date. I'm betting they'll pitch something like '50% of games will work at launch!' but what they'll neglect to mention is that that 50% is mostly made up of crap like Crazy Frog Racer and Barbie's Horse Adventures whilst key PS2 titles like FF12 and MGS won't work :p
