A Gemmel thread

I don't understand why there isn't a discussion spot/thread devoted to David Gemmel. His books remained consistently brilliant up until his death whereas some of the other author's have had some seriously weak books at times (except Pratchett, nothing Pratchett writes is ever weak).

Please take note moderators, site-gods etc. you have overlooked a fantastic author and a thread devoted to him would be well worth the effort to create it.
He wrote some of the best heroic fantasy of our time and his discussion pages would be lively and interesting.

I'm not a moderator, but I've been around a few years, and I have to say I think that your point is a little unkind. A decision such as dedicating a section on an author I imagine would depend on the number of requests, and the number of threads already started on the matter which could be moved over.

Lots of us here I know grew up on Gemmell, his great books, and his great morals, but then there are lots of authors who are read and loved by many of us who don't have their own space as there just isn't the demand. I should think Hobbit will give you a much more concrete answer, but for now, I'd say, ask nicely if it could be started up and offer to moderate it yourself if it is a possibility.

I would also like to take a snippet of umbrage on behalf of NOM who moderates here as he was friends with the great man, and as I understand it, was mentored by him, so being accused of overlooking a great author might not come across too well.

Let's start with the point that it's Gemmell, shall we? I think that may be the problem.

If you are talking about threads, then putting Gemmell into the Search Function gives you 500 threads where David is mentioned, and in the first half a dozen or so pages there were six specifically about David - I stopped looking after that.

If you are looking at specific Author Forum Areas, the issue of who we give and don't give Forum areas to has usually been decided by the volume of traffic on the website. The authors with specific Author Areas are either run by the Authors themselves or ones with enough volume of posts to merit it. Thus the Author Areas are, to a degree, decided by the members themselves. If an author gets talked about enough for a long period of time, then they may get an Author Area, but that is determined by volume of discussion by the Forumites themselves.

There are quite a few authors who are worthy of merit - David may be one of them - but who do not have enough responses on the Forums to generate the need for their own area and in fact may be missed because they have their own area and are missed by fans because they have been isolated.

That's not to say that the authors are bad or don't deserve it; personally I like David's work a lot, and was honoured to speak at a Tribute for him last year. He is one of the few authors in the UK of any genre to have all of his 30+ works still in print here, and there's an awful lot of fans out there: including yourself, Esme, and a few others around here. But when we look at the general scheme of things here there's not enough postings about David to merit him being isolated from the Fantasy section.

Hope this explains more clearly.

Sorry, I didn't realise that I sounded so snarky, no offense meant guys. Just finished the two Troy books (read both of them in 3 days and the family are none too pleased with me) and they reminded me of how much I love his writing.
It's really sad that that's it. Though I suppose if anyone could finish them and stay true to his vision it would be his wife, Stella.

There might not be a dedicated Gemmell thread here, but there are plenty of Gemmell fans.

Check out the thread that started after his passing: http://www.sffworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14423

The above thread has over 100 posts and over 5000 views, so it's clear that Gemmell is hugely popular here even without a forum.

Yes, start a thread about who people think is the best fantasywarrior, then a great deal of them mentioned would be a Gemmellcreation.
(I'm particulary found of Shannow and Waylander.)

I think it is safe to close this thread then, considering as Hobbit pointed out there ARE Gemmell threads, including on started in the past week.
