Really? The top 10 best books of all time? What list is that :) ?

A list I have to start that would generate lots of discussion! [read controversy]

Nightsorrow, "Manna From Heaven" collects a bunch of Zelazny's short stories from 1965 to 1996. My impression was that most of these hadn't seen print for a long time.

It's a mixed bag, though there is some excellent stuff. The AMBER stories are really short pieces mainly set around the time of the second AMBER series and feature events that happened 'behind the scenes'. I for one was pleased to read them but they are not 'necessary'.

Bookwise, I thought that he was getting his groove back at the end. "A Night in the Lonesome October" is brilliant.

The two books published after his death, "Donnerjack" and "Lord Demon", finished by his friend Jane Lindskold, are most enjoyable.

Im searching for a new fantasy series, and this seemed interesting.

Is this series recommended or should I keep searching? The reviews on Amazon are quite good and the summary sounds intriguing.

Also, the only new version is "The Great Book of Amber" at more than 1200 pages . I like saving money, but I would hate to lug that thing everywhere I go, which I tend to do with my books. Is there another version that splits the series into smaller pieces??

I enjoyed the Amber series - but I'll admit to skipping every section where he goes:

red trees ... smoke in the east ... turn a corner and the sea is orange ...

You can go for pages like that. See the ... and just skip.

His writing is quite brief, his descriptions often too summary for the huge changes in scene, but even so, he makes it compelling somehow.

Haha, I have to agree with you. Those "..." descriptions were getting tiresome the second time around. But even so the first five books are fantastically well written stuff, and remains one of my very favorite book series. The last five are also great, but of lesser quality. Still, all 10 are worth reading. Plus, that 10-volume mega-book is very stylish. :D

The Amber series is great. Just about all posters have pointed out that the first five are the best, and I agree. Still, I did enjoy the whole series.

Roadmarks is my absolute favorite Zelazny book. Lord of Light is a close second. Creatures of Light and Darkness is good, and so are a number of others.
