Oh, a quest of many years finds new life on the internet.

Okay, I once read a (pair of?) sci-fi novel(s) written in the form of letters, memoranda, and reports at an institute (or two competing institutes?) where two psychics were being studied. The climax came when the two battled it out as personifications of good vs evil, and because the battle was psychic everyone who saw contextualized it in terms of their metaphysical beliefs - Jesus & Satan, Kali & Vishnu, etc.

The only other scene I remember clearly involved one of the subjects keeping hundreds of balls bouncing in a handball court and the scientist computing that it was physically impossible for him to be in the room without the balls passing through the space occupied by his body.

Any thoughts?

The novel(s) were definitely epistolary.

I read them in grade school (I'm sure it all went over my head, but it was my custom to haunt the stacks of the public library reading anything with the little Atom sticker on the spine) and have been trying to ferret them out every year or so for the last quarter century with no luck at all :(

It's been over a year so I thought I'd bump this in case there are new members who might recognize it :)

Three years on and still nothing but (literary) heartache.

If any fresh eyes (or old eyes with fresh reads) are handy, please wrack your brains.

Thanks, all :)

...gets it's quasi-annual bump.

I wonder if I got some key detail wrong?

Hmm, googling doesn't seem to bring anything up. Doesn't ring a bell with me, isn't it frustrating? I have a few I try every now and then to find.

Keep trying ... good luck.

Six and half years on. By far the White Whale-est of all my SF White Whales. Here's a bump :)

 I guess I will redact the claim that they were "definitely epistolary". The parts I remember were reports and letters, but I remember so little that much of it could have been more traditionally written.

I also have a strong feeling that the author's name was ethnically Eastern European or Russian. Though that feeling obviously hasn't helped me at all.
