What Stephen King to try?

This is from http://www.stephenking.com (so it should be accurate, even though it's from November last year):

Update on Mist

Filming began this week in Louisiana on the long-awaited movie adaptation of The Mist. Frank Darabont, who directed Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, is also heading this project.

Cast members include:

Andre Braugher as Norton
Jeff DeMunn as Dan Miller
Marcia Gay Harden as Mrs. Carmody
Laurie Holden as Amanda
Thomas Jane as David
Toby Jones as Ollie
Bill Sadler as Jim

Dimension has this currently scheduled for release in theaters in November.

That's a November 2007 release, one would assume. As an aside, later on the site mentions filming began in February 2007, so the release might be pushed back a bit, too.

I had heard about the possibility of a film, but that rumor has been going around for years. I also heard last year that Darabont would be directing and that seemed like a good sign. Still, the rumor of a filmed version has been floating for years, especially since CGI came of age, so I wasn't hopeful.

I'm happy to hear this might really come to be. Done well, it'll be like a souped-up version of the old B movies (like, say, "Creature from the Black Lagoon").

From a Buick 8 -- a sf-tinged dark fantasy mystery.

This, Dreamcatcher, and The Tommyknockers are probably three of his weakest efforts. I like the majority of King's work, but when he lingers into SF-nal territory, it is with mixed results, at best.

Haven't read those two, but "From a Buick 8," while it has its flaws, is now one of my favorites of his. It's a fable, it's more contemplative, closer to The Green Mile, which I also like very much. What I found brilliant was that in just seven pages, he creates an entire, layered cast of characters and emotional relationships, and builds the story around those. The fantasy elements are almost incidental. Which I thought was an interesting approach and well-suited for that particular story.

I don't agree that King writes the same story over and over, though there are certain themes/issues that particularly fascinate him and to which he returns. But for me, he writes very different stories, one from the other. I don't always like what direction he picks, but I'm always impressed with his skills at structure.

I heard that they would do a movie of The Talisman, does anybody know anything about it?

King film adapts can be very hit and miss...

Related to that, there was an article on scifiwire.com last week in which King confirmed that two of the producers/directors of the Lost TV series will be doing a movie of The Dark Tower.

IMDB has it listed for 2010, I'm not sure if it will take that long.

As for the books, I still have the entire Dark Tower cycle, The Stand, Girl that loved Tom Gordon and Different Seasons on my shelf, all yet to be read.
