Undoubtedly fantasy authors have the best imaginations in the universe and i'd like to ask everyone out there what are the best names you've read? in the Narnia series i thought Cair Paravel was a gorgeous name for a city and in the Serpentwar series Calis was a good name too. there are loads more names which i can't remember off the top of my head so what does everyone else think is a great name for a city/person/object etc?

I think Amber is the most magical name for a city and i really love it. ( Zelazny's amber series)
I also like the names in LOTR since they ar eboth uniqe and still the ymean something in the language of the world. YES FitzChivalry I am awaiting your comment anxiously http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

I agree with Drakon on LOTR's names (those in Silmarillion are even better though, esp. all those high elven names)
personal favorites: Numenor, Fingolfin, Feanor, Barad-dur, Valinor, Nazgul, Asha'man, Lanfear, Cairhien, Elessar, Rohirrim, Sardaukar, Sesuad'ra are some names that spring to mind immediately

drakon, as i mentioned in the other thread it doesn't bother me that people say "i like Tolkien" it does bother me when people say "Tolkien is best and your opinion is wrong becasue you don't think like me" .

Hi!
I love those names, too, but I think that most of them are not as new as I believe. It happened to me already some times that I thought names of citys, people etc. wonderful and then I discovered that they were simply taken from another language or some myths... still, I couldn't do it, and so I enjoy the names! (and everything else in fantasy)

I know what you mean, it's okay.
I was just teasing, let's not bring the Tolkein argument into this thread also or we'll just prove sojourn's point. http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif

let us know some of your favourite names.
peace.

I thought Limey Knucklecracker was a damn funny, if not pretty, name...I forget what the title of the book was. Just remember the name, and that Limey had a taste for spoiled tomatoes. *BLEAH*
