I was wondering how you guys fealt about different tittles. What I mean is, do you like titles that refer specificly to something within the fantasy world, like The Seeress Of Kell, The Sword of Shannara, The Last of the Renshai, D'Shai or do you prefer more concrete titles--Eye of the World, Dragon Prince, When True Niight Falls, The Sleeping Dragon.

Feel free to say why or why not.

If it sounds cool, who cares..
Of course, it has to have relation to happens in the book.

I see. Have you read Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan? Good title. I'm just clueless as to how it pertains to the book. But that's a whole 'nother forum, isn't it.

1st: I don't like the title to give away the book. I like it to be "mysterious" somehow, to make you wonder.
2nd: I think the title must be related to the book. When you reach a certain point, you must be able to say: "Oh! that's why s/he named it thus."

(I too am cluetless about why Jordan titled his book "Fires of Heaven". But its a cool title, anyway http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif )

My opinion of the possible reason/explanation behind the title "Fires of Heaven"

Spoiler alert-------------------------------

In this book, if I remember correctly, we see the first instance of Balefire being rediscovered and used. Balefire could be considered a "Fires of Heaven" because it causes time flux and can *change* the course of history by unraveling a time sequence.

Hmm. Well Ladyfox, that's as good a reason as any.

___Psuedo Spoiler___

Didn't Moraine use balefire to kill some of those fire hounds or whatever the hell they are (what ever happened to them anyway?) in the Dragon Reborn? A little after Faile joins the party. . .

Anyway!

I'm curious to hear more opinions on titles.

My favourite book title is "A Dark and Hungry God Arises" from Stephen Donaldson... A cool-sounding title and though it doesn't really tell anything about what happens in the book, it falls into place when you sit down and think about it later.

Feist's "Magician" was a great book but I'm sure he could have come up with a better title... The ones for the Serpent War Saga were much better

Well, I'm not too concerned about the title of the book, as logn as it has something to with the story and hopefully sounds cool. Some generic fantasy titles can be a bit off putting- The Something of Something type titles like The Sword of Power or some such.

As for The Fires of Heaven (Possible SPOILERS), I assumed it was to do with the Balefire as well. Although it was introduced a couple of books previously it does feature prominently in the conclusion when Rahvin goes apeshit with the stuff to try and kill Rand and his reciprocration with the same.

My favorite book names are for books by Roger Zelazny who is also my favorite author. Books like "This Immortal" "Today we choose faces" "My name is Legion" and "Bring me the head of Prince Charming".

I like when the title is a saying or phrase that is used once, but prominently in the book.

Titles I specifically like: A Storm of Swords and Eyes of the Dragon
As for The Fires of Heaven, the following is the opening quote from the book:
...The wall is pierced, and the veil of parting raised. Storms rumble beyond the horizon, and the fires of heaven purge the earth...
--fragment from the Prophecies of the Dragon believed translated...(circa 400 AB)
