Hey, I hope you guys can help! My friend and I remember this science fiction short story and movie from awhile ago but cannot remember the name for the lives of us. Anyway, its the story of these children in a future where the sun only comes out for a few minutes, once in a lifetime or so, and everyone must use halogen lamps all the time to get sunlight. The story covers the one time the sun comes out, and I think someone keeps this one girl from getting outside when the sun comes out, and she misses it. I think a boy tries to bring her back a flower, but it dies anyway. I could have the facts wrong, but does anyone know what I'm talking about? We're really grateful if you know!!!

I think the story you are looking for is by Ray Bradbury and is set on either Venus or Mercury with the planet rotating so that one side is almost in perpetual darkness. I will scan through my books to find out the title. back in a moment.

I'm back - found it, first time. Its called All Summer in a Day and is in the collection of shorts called Twice 22. It is Bradbury and the collection is a reprint of two older collections 'The Golden Apples of the Sun' and 'A Medicine for Melancholy' the story being from the later. And it is set on Venus and yes the poor girl is locked in a closet.

I've never seen the movie, how old is it? Do you think it has the same title? I'll look it up on imdb

Hope that helps.

This story is about hunting and being hunted. People are transported to a wild planet for safari-style hunts (or something like that). Some of the people transported there might be criminals, I'm not sure. But the twist in the story is that firepower becomes a liability instead of an asset. The guy with the biggest, deadliest gun becomes the target of the other hunters, all of whom want to kill the guy and take the gun for themselves. The protagonist gets around this problem by deliberatingly choosing weapons for his safari expedition that AREN'T the strongest, even though he had the option to take weapons that outclassed everything carried on safari by others.

I read the story in the 1970s so it's not anywhere close to being new.

I'm thinking one of the big names wrote this story, like Heinlein or someone. Anyone recognize this?

Thanks!

I obviously have some rereading to do. For years I've thought this story was Nightfall by Asimov. Now I get to read two 'new' stories. ... it also explains why the 'Nightfall' movie I saw (made in India I think) was so far from the plot I remembered.
