Here is an excerpt of a friends email, I made a few guesses, but didn't come up with what he is thinking of:

I am trying to find out the name of the book that I've read a while ago. I
do not remember the author but just few highlights from the story line:

Human colonized galaxy and are at war with another alien civilization;
Based on numbers, humans are bound to loose the war;
Earth has isolated itself from the rest of human civilization by setting up
mine fields around solar system;
An envoy is sent out from Earth to the leaders of alien civilizations,
which proceeds to antagonize aliens provoking them to send out most of
their fleet to destroy Earth;
When alien fleet comes into the solar system it gets destroyed along with
Earth (it was a trap)

It also appears that this might be the first book of the series.

Any ideas on what might this book be?

This reminds me of Norman Spinrad's 'The Solarians' but it is a standalone novel.
