I just got finished listening to a speech by Christopher Vogler called "Using Myth to Power Your Story." I'd be curious to know if anyone else here has read his book or listened to him speak, and what your thoughts were.

In overview, Vogler essentially rehashes work by Joseph Cambell that studies the underlying components that seem to permeate both myths and popular stories. He talks about the "monomyth" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth) or "hero's journey," which essentially defines the plotline for most popular stories. I think the monomyth is worth studying, at least on a superficial level, for any aspiring writer - especially fantasy writers - as so much stuff turned out by beginning writers seems to follow the monomyth like a mad lib.

In my opinion, if you get a chance to listen to this talk, it's well worth the investment. He's a great speaker. Unfortunately he does tend to meander with the points he's trying to make.
