I often suffer from this. I sit down, begin a book that I am enjoying, and within 30 mins, I'm drifting off to sleep, or extremely drowsy..
Any ides how to combat this?
I know I'm not the only one who suffers from this!
C'Mon! Let's find a Cure to this! =)

Why find a cure? I for one cannot get to sleep unless I read for about half an hour.
However if you study, or do a job of work for a full day, you are bound to be tired. So the worse thing you can do is pick a book up. Maybe you should look at WHEN you read, i.e. in the evening, after a long day studying or working.
Of course you are gonna get the "read summat intresting" rant, I have gone without sleep, because I find it hard to put some books down... but mostly, reading helps me to sleep.

I can read for hours before even getting drowsy. I sometimes have something to eat, sweets, chocolates, crisp's etc while reading.
You are supposed to keep the book at least 25cm from your eyes, for it to focus clearly, and puts less strain on the muscles around your eyes, therefore your eyes do not tire as quickly.

Never read in bed during the day time. Heck never read lying down anywhere(couch,bench,etc...).

Walk around when reading, or read somewhere that is well lit. I usually want to go to sleep when I read, so I usually read in bed, but if you do not want to fall asleep, either change the time you read, or do it some place where you cannot fall asleep.
On a side note, you could try reading a book that doesn't put you to sleep.

I had the same problem til the new baby came along - LOL. Now I have her to keep me awake while I read.
Or on the flipside, when the baby just won't stop crying unless you hold it in your arms and rock it, reading passes the time http://www.sffworld.com/ubb/wink.gif
